Text-to-image generators have gained tremendous popularity over the past years. This specific application of artificial intelligence allows users to create digital images based on textual input. It seems that any desired image is just a few clicks away, with little to no technological knowledge about the inner workings needed.  

But what happens underneath the hood? How does a text-to-image AI exactly work? This step-by-step explainer will lift (some) of the curtains of image generation and shed light inside the black box of AI.

by Augusta Curiel. Augusta Curiel (1873-1937) was one of Suriname’s first women photographers, running a highly successful photography studio in Paramaribo together with her sister Anna (1875-1958). The exhibition offers a contemporary perspective on the people and landscapes of Suriname as captured through the lens of the ‘Curiel Sisters’ in the early twentieth century. Featuring both well-known and rarely seen images, this exhibition highlights their versatile practice and unique role in Surinamese society during the Dutch colonial era.

 by non-fiction artist and photographer Khashayar Javanmardi. Javanmardi, who grew up in this region, has spent the last decade documenting the deterioration of the southern shore of the Caspian, which borders Iran.

His ongoing project captures the deterioration of the south shore of the Caspian Sea and underscores the need to connect political and structural change to everyday life in response to the mismanagement of the region and global climate crisis.

Created by Gerco de Ruijter in 2003. The artwork is a c-print on aluminum and displayed at 50 x 50 cm.

Today one might think that this image was taken with the help of a drone. However, back in 2003, drones weren’t all that common. Instead, the Dutch photographer Gerco de Ruijter attached an analogue camera to a kite to get a bird's-eye view of the construction site. De Ruijter’s artistic practice is characterised by his use of unique perspectives, allowing him to search for patterns from the sky to create abstract representations of the landscape. The geometric shapes in the image consist of areas from the building site in different stages of construction, giving the image a mosaic-like feel. 

In the early 2000s, several photographers were invited to capture the construction of the financial district of Amsterdam (Zuidas). 

 belongs to a series that presents Gerco de Ruijter’s interpretation of this project.

. This exhibition is a public space intervention on the GVB ferry and serves as a contemporary response to the historical exhibition 

‘Tapsei’ is a word from Sranantongo that literally means ‘upwards’. In the context of Suriname’s interior, it also refers to a way of orienting oneself, navigation through landscape, memory, and community. In everyday usage, ‘tapsei’ is also commonly used as a term for the Surinamese interior itself.

Created by Betty Ras in 2006. Using inkjet on FinArt Baryta by Hahnemühle as the medium, the artwork is displayed at 50 x 50 cm.

Betty Ras is one of the photographers who took part in 

, a long-term project recording the construction of the financial district of Amsterdam, De Zuidas, in the early 2000s. Each year different photographers were invited to give their own interpretation of the continuously changing construction side. De Zuidas is characterised by high-rise buildings, housing the offices of large multinationals and top accounting and law firms.

 shows the outline of one of the first high-rises in the area as seen from a nearby park. Ras worked with black-and-white photography, giving the image a timeless feel. The bright cut-out in contrast to the dark surroundings of the park stands out. Through this intervention, Betty Ras emphasises how the high-rises from De Zuidas form a new skyline, fundamentally changing the scenery of this area.
