For Foam Fan+ members, Foam organises three photography workshops in November based on Marubi&rsquo;s studio portraits.

Portrait photography is one of the oldest genres of photography. People who had their portraits taken back in the day wanted to utilize the photograph as a way to show their personality and status. They achieved this by having photographs taken of themselves alongside their most precious belongings, such as medals or costumes.
Nowadays we see self-portraits on a daily basis without maybe even realizing it. Selfies are practically inevitable in our environment since the digital camera and camera phones became accessible for almost everyone.
In the exhibition <a href="/museum/programme/dynasty-marubi">Dynasty Marubi</a> &ndash; <a href="/museum/programme/dynasty-marubi">A Hundred Years of Albanian Studio Photography</a>, Foam shows a selection of photos from the archive of the Albanian photo studio Marubi (1856-1959). Marubi&rsquo;s exhibition, where portrait and studio photography of the 19th century and nowadays are the central theme, is used as inspiration for the upcoming workshop in October.
THE WORKSHOP During this workshop you challenge yourself to think about the way people take a portrait photograph. You are encouraged to reflect on the methods we use to make portraits nowadays in comparison to decades ago. By using Marubi&rsquo;s work as an example, we will discuss and compare the changes that have occurred during the previous century. How has the way we take photographs changed and do we need more photographs to create a fair portrayal of our image?
The goal of this workshop is to create two portraits of each other; one in an old-fashioned way where you &lsquo;catch&rsquo; the subject in one image, and the other will be a modern portrait where you perhaps need to create a narrative.

Foam offers a workshop on how to create a striking photographic portrait. This workshop will help you take even better photos of your friends and family!
Challenge yourself to think differently during the CJP portrait workshop at Foam! In this workshop, you learn all about portrait photography. To get inspired, you examine and discuss the work of professional photographers and then get to work with the camera yourself. You will improve your photos with the immediate feedback from our knowledgeable museum educators.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP The CJP workshop starts with an active tour of the museum during which you will become familiar with the principles and visual elements of photography. During the workshop you and your fellow students take each other's portraits, with a focus on making conscious choices before pressing the shutter. As you shoot, the experienced museum educator will give you tips on how to improve your photos. At the end of the workshop, all results will be reviewed and discussed in the group.
This workshop will delve more deeply into the&nbsp;<a href="/museum/programme/helmut-newton">Helmut Newton</a>&nbsp;exhibition.
Foam provides digital compact Olympus cameras for this workshop. You are free to use your own camera in case you prefer so. In that case, remember to bring a fully charged battery, an empty SD card and a transfer cable. The use of your own materials is at your own risk.

In Western media, Haiti is generally portrayed as a place plagued by poverty, natural disasters and corruption – a one-dimensional view that was reinforced by the devastating earthquake that hit the country in 2010. In her series 

, Stefanie Moshammer presents an alternative and more nuanced view that highlights Haiti’s unique culture, language and history without brushing aside the country’s issues. Moshammer’s photos poetically capture the Haitian people’s living conditions in close-ups of human figures that showcase both the country’s idyllic beauty and the struggles of living without a water supply or electricity. 

 has a certain dynamism and playfulness you don’t often find in portrait photography. Take another good look at the photo: what elements can you identify that strengthen this dynamic feel?

, photographer Alessandro Imbriaco seamlessly combines the portrait genre with documentary photography. In this image, traditional portrait photography techniques stand out: the subject is placed at the centre of the image, with the body turned slightly to the right while the head turns back to face the camera. At the same time, Imbriaco creates a somewhat mysterious atmosphere by the poor quality of light that gently falls on her rosy cheeks. This mood is enhanced by the background: dark and wild shrubbery surrounds the timid-looking girl, named Angela. The portrait hides the dire reality of migrants leading a concealed and isolated life in a marshy area at the edge of Rome, Italy. Imbriaco’s comment on this work: “

The colours are interesting and muted, like a Garden of Eden where everything has gone wrong.

, the Italian photographer Alessandro Imbriaco was selected for Foam Talent 2011. The story about Angela’s family’s life was shown as part of the group exhibition and in Foam Magazine #28 Talent.

The young man in the image, Mallam Mantari Lamal, is part of a group of traveling troubadours in Nigeria known as the 'Hyena men'. In addition to taming and performing with hyenas, they sell traditional medicines as they tour the country. The heavy chain and sturdy muzzle covering the hyena's mouth reveal the strength of the predator at the end of the leash. However, Mallam strikes a confident pose as he stands next to the calmly reclining hyena.  

Pieter Hugo’s photographs are a blend of documentary and portrait photography. They not only portray the people he encounters, but also introduce their culture, lifestyle and environment. Through this series, Hugo highlights the paradoxical relationship between the men and their animals: both caring and cruel.

What body language do you observe in this double portrait of a man and a hyena? Inspired by a conversation with a friend, the Dutch photographer Pieter Hugo travelled to Nigeria to meet the so-called ‘hyena men’, a group of traveling performers shrouded in mystery. Rather than capturing the performances themselves, Hugo was more intrigued by the relation between the animal trainers and their hyenas. Tensed muscles, wide stance, and fierce gaze: both figures embody a sense of power and strength. The power play between Abdullahi Mohammed and Mainasara becomes physically visible in this image, in which the animal trainer keeps the hyena under control. 

, Hugo travelled with the Hyena men for two years, creating a range of work that hovers midway between documentary and portrait photography.

This photograph comes from a shoot that Harley Weir did for the 'Female Gaze Issue' from i-D Magazine (August 2016). For the first time in the history of the famous youth culture magazine, it devoted an entire number to women seen through the lens of only female photographers. How do women look at women? It is a theme that Harley Weir has been involved in for some time. While working in the context of the fashion industry, her photographs show a different approach to women - one that does not necessarily meet the standard beauty ideal. For example, she refuses to brush away something like pigmentation marks on the body of a model in her photos. Time and again she seeks out the tension between the erotic and functional meaning of the erogenous zones of the female body.

In a four-part series led by acclaimed Polaroid artists Rhiannon Adams, Ellen Carey & John Reuter, and Marcel Veldman and Foam 3h alumnus Ece Gökalp, the participating students were able to use the recently launched Polaroid I-2 camera – the first advanced instant camera with built-in manual controls. Moreover, they had the chance to discuss their perspectives about the possibilities of storytelling and the enduring relevancy of this unique medium.

Students as well as young, self-made creatives approached the medium from various angles and shed light on its artistic, social, and technological significance by pushing the boundaries of what instant film can achieve. The results of their collective efforts are now on display as part of an exclusive online exhibition.
