In Western media, Haiti is generally portrayed as a place plagued by poverty, natural disasters and corruption – a one-dimensional view that was reinforced by the devastating earthquake that hit the country in 2010. In her series Tomorrow of Yesterday, Stefanie Moshammer presents an alternative and more nuanced view that highlights Haiti’s unique culture, language and history without brushing aside the country’s issues. Moshammer’s photos poetically capture the Haitian people’s living conditions in close-ups of human figures that showcase both the country’s idyllic beauty and the struggles of living without a water supply or electricity. Kawa, 2017 has a certain dynamism and playfulness you don’t often find in portrait photography. Take another good look at the photo: what elements can you identify that strengthen this dynamic feel?
