Our experienced museum teachers challenge you to look closely and form your own opinion on the photography in the museum.

During the Free Guided Tour, you will visit the exhibitions in a group of at most 15 people. The museum teacher strikes a balance between posing questions and providing information, helping you discover the story of the photographer, the subject and the context of the exhibitions together.

This series presents eight talented image-makers from both the fair's Curiosa Sector and Foam Talent 2021. Each of the episodes welcomes two photographers, one of each organisations' talent programme. On May 5, Foam organises a freedom lunch at two different locations: in our museum and in MAQAM, a creative space in Amsterdam West.

Depending on your choice of location, our museum teachers will give you an interactive tour through the exhibition 

 by Cemre Yesil. During the tour, you are challenged to look closely at the work and form your own opinion about the work. To make it an interactive experience, the museum teacher will ask questions and provide you with information. In this way, you’ll discover the story of the photographer, the subject and the context of the exhibition together.

The tour is followed by a delicious dinner soup, where the freedom toast is recited and visitors are challenged to delve deeper into the topics of the exhibition and the concept of freedom itself. Afterwards, all participants can send a wish for freedom by post.

Join us and expand your world on the day that annually reminds us of freedom for every human being.

Guillaume Simoneau creates fragmented, personal stories through photography. Fact gives way to perspective, and truth to opinion in his work, which unfolds nonlinearly. The birds in his series&nbsp;Murder (2016-2019) are friends, alter egos and protagonists. Found images in a loose drawer of the family Krull's home, breathe life into the voyage reimagined by Adrian Bosc in the novel Capitaine. Identified by Olivier Assayas, this story takes you on a journey in terms of imagery as in writing.&nbsp;With&nbsp;Andr&eacute; Breton, Jacqueline Lamba, Claude L&eacute;vi-Strauss, Victor Serge, Wifredo Lam, and Anna Seghers among Capitaine-Paul-Lemerle&rsquo;s passengers,&nbsp;their 1941 crossing from Marseille to Fort-de-France is the focus. Mohamed Bourouissa can be found in Monoprix. He chose this particular location to display fifteen years of creation combining photography, video, painting, drawing and sculpture. A superstore provides an interesting context to his body of work, which questions the place of the unemployed and humble members of our society, but also the circulation of money and knowledge. By using various methods (re-enacted scenes, hidden cameras, stolen and phone photography), Mohamed Bourouissa reveals fragments of reality by bringing out new stories.&nbsp;

Laurence A&euml;gerter invents a new method of photo development: the darkroom exists in broad daylight. In her Cath&eacute;drales series, created in 2014, A&euml;gerter opened a book from the fifties (Cath&eacute;drales et &eacute;glises de France) on the central double page which showed the gothic cathedral of Bourges. In her studio, every minute for two hours, she captured the movement of the sun and the projected shadow from the windows which was gradually obscuring the reproduction, until it became invisible. This exhibition is the visual tale of Mario Del Curto&rsquo;s 10-year journey around the globe. The photographer explores the relationship between man and nature and beckons us to reflect on a potentially &ldquo;soilless humanity&rdquo;. Among the places, the artist visited: the vast and endangered apple forest of Kazakhstan, urban gardens from several cities, Bomarzo&rsquo;s eccentric Park of the Monsters, and other unique or modest gardens from all over the world. Wild or tamed, gardens always evoke cultures, people and knowledge. Through strong and symbolic images, he shows the garden in all its forms: nourishing, scientific, ornamental, artistic and political.

Editor's Talk Foam Magazine 2018

In 2014, Constant Dullaart bought and distributed 2.5 million artificial followers to &lsquo;follow&rsquo; a selection of active art-world Instagram accounts for a project commissioned by Jeu de Paume in Paris and Der Hartware MedienKunstVerein (HMKV) Dortmund.

With this action, he reproduced a common practice used to boost the popularity of celebrities or political personalities on social media platforms.
By equalizing the amount of followers on each account, and inherently removing the issue of quantified popularity from this part of the art scene, Dullaart was called the Lenin of social media; a symbolic act of socialism on social media. Furthermore, Dullaart points to the implications of the attention economy, based on audience as the ultimate commodity. The generation of a mass of followers is key to artists creating a brand online, performing a continuous LARP (live-action role play) as part of their work. The way in which audience precedes the work of an artist, creating a place for it in the art world, goes through the same channels of a system which capitalizes on social markers: preferences and likes online become value in terms of legitimacy and market presence.

The printed Instagram profiles are physical realizations of a selection of the fake accounts acquired and used by Dullaart. The artificial profiles are created from &lsquo;scraped images&rsquo;, without the consent of copyright, the biographies copied and &lsquo;spun&rsquo; from existing accounts. The contents are manipulated to induce spelling mistakes so that the original users cannot find their altered profile through Google searches or other means. Most of these bots have 3 to 5 randomly cropped image uploads, follow thousands of accounts and in turn are followed by few to none.

In the light of the 'hacking' and abusing of Facebook and Instagram accounts, the distribution of 'fake news' and the manipulation of public opinion&nbsp;100,000 Followers for Everyone is now more relevant and up to date than ever. Foam therefore considers it very important to show this work.

Foam Magazine, which was recently voted Best Photography Magazine of the Year at the Lucie Awards in New York City, contains portfolios that are deliberately printed on different types of paper. Interviews and opinions from experts in the field of photography are combined with surprising and distinctive editorial choices. During an exclusive evening for Club Foam members, artistic director Marcel Feil and managing editor Elisa Medde will explain how the magazine is created and give a preview of the new issue that will be published at the end of December.

Starting&nbsp;24 February, the solo exhibition&nbsp;of French artist <a href="/museum/programme/stephanie-solinas">St&eacute;phanie Solinas</a>&nbsp;is on show at Foam. Solinas' work explores contemporary ideas about identity that are informed by practical applications within photography. Also on view are exhibitions of the Japanese master <a href="/museum/programme/hiroshi-sugimoto">Hiroshi Sugimoto</a> and the Chinese provocateur <a href="/museum/programme/ren-hang">Ren Hang</a>.&nbsp;

WORKSHOPS

On 22 February, Foam offers a <a href="/museum/programme/children-s-workshop-carnival-holidays">photography workshop</a> for children between 8 and 12 years of age. Kids will draw inspiration from <a href="/museum/programme/hiroshi-sugimoto">Hiroshi Sugimoto's</a>&nbsp;seminal work, which they will then use to create their own photos.&nbsp;
Adults, don't feel left out! We also have a workshop for you: <a href="/museum/programme/shutter-time-and-light">Shutter Time and Light</a>.&nbsp;During this workshop you will, among other things, experiment with shutter time and light to create an image in which abstraction and detail are combined. Inspiration and techniques for this workshop are again drawn from&nbsp;<a href="/museum/programme/hiroshi-sugimoto">Hiroshi Sugimoto's</a>&nbsp;practice. This workshop is available in English (<a href="/book-a-visit/public/shutter-time-and-light/25-02-2017">25 February</a>) and in Dutch (<a href="/book-a-visit/public/shutter-time-and-light/18-02-2017">18 February</a>).&nbsp;

Half-term Holiday

In her work, Melanie Bonajo uses photography, film, installations and music to explore cultural and sociological phenomena, among other contemporary themes.

Her trilogy <a href="/museum/programme/melanie-bonajo">Night Soil</a>, a series of experimental semi-documentary films that call into question the linear progressions of the capitalist system, is currently on view at Foam. On the occasion of this exhibition Melanie Bonajo presents The Anti-Capitalist Medicine Circles in Foam.
Melanie Bonajo: &ldquo;Why do modern citizens want to detach themselves from sources of shared strength around them? We see ourselves as isolated, alone and vulnerable, rather than united in a collective spirit. Capitalism has succeeded in commodifying our communication system and eliminated basic notions of our humanity: a need for physical proximity, cognitive understanding, emotional attachment, and honouring the relational aspect of our being. The Anti-Capitalist Medicine Circles is a group medicine expanding on the place self-care takes within capitalism. We will turn the museum space in to a temple of caring, expanding on the notion of intimacy as an act of disobedience. The visitor is called on to express her opinion, speak for herself, get involved. We aren&rsquo;t in the process, we are the process.&rdquo;
Three guests are invited to elaborate on particular aspects of Melanie&rsquo;s practice:
<ul style="list-style-type: disc;">
<li>Christian Greer, philosophy teacher at the University of Amsterdam. He&rsquo;s currently working on his dissertation, Angelheaded Hipsters: From the Birth of Beatnik Antinomianism to Psychedelic Millenarianism.</li>
<li>Margriet van Heesch, PhD., Cultural Analysis scholar and teacher at the University of Amsterdam. She wrote her dissertation on intersexuality: They Didn't Know Whether I Was a Boy or a Girl: Knowledge, Choice and Intersex Conditions.</li>
<li>Izabella Finch, comedian and performer. She is interested in the role of food in our lives, and will touch upon our sense of taste as a form of knowledge.</li>
</ul>
Melanie Bonajo herself will speak about the role of animals in her work. She will also talk about how her films are a critique on hyper-individualization, and a revolt against the wearing away of trust and other human facets that are often excluded from our digital landscape.
Please note that there will not be enough time to view all three films (&plusmn; 110 min.) during Night Soil Live. Foam therefore recommends visiting the exhibition prior to the event. 
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Since 2012 Dutch artist Melanie Bonajo, who lives and works between Amsterdam and New York, has been working on the&nbsp;<a href="/museum/programme/melanie-bonajo">Night Soil</a>&nbsp;trilogy. The series explores trends outside sociological and political norms of consumer society, most of them illegal.&nbsp;<a href="/museum/programme/melanie-bonajo">Next Level: Melanie Bonajo &ndash; Night Soil</a>&nbsp;is the first major solo museum exhibition bringing together all three video works.

Night Soil Live

New methods of reporting the news, new imaginations of what the news might be, have given birth to the most interesting ideas. This critical approach is called, following Allan Sekula, &lsquo;antiphotojournalism&rsquo;.

Photojournalism is in the midst of a remarkable, and singularly unexpected, renaissance. New practices, strategies, viewpoints, techniques, and agents have radically transformed the institutions and the fundamental concepts of the field. Whilst it has become fashionable to lament the death of photojournalism, actual events suggest that something quite different is taking place.
Antiphotojournalism provides a profound and passionate fidelity to the image, unleashed from the demands of the traditional approach of photojournalism. It has a multiplicity of forms, such as film, video, slides, web-based presentations and many more. It is freed to ask other questions, to make other claims, to tell other stories.
Sometimes the gesture is reflective. Sometimes the desire is evidentiary not in the old sense of simply offering the &lsquo;evidence&rsquo; of images to an assumedly homogenous public opinion, but in a much more precise way: photographs have become evidence in war crimes tribunals. Sometimes the innovation is technological, whether it involves working with the hi-tech resources of advanced satellite imagery or the low-tech crowd-sourcing of participatory protest imaging. Sometimes the practices are archival. And sometimes the question is simply whether we even need images at all.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION The group exhibition Antiphotojournalism charts new developments in exciting ways. Included is work by Broomberg &amp; Chanarin, Mauro Andrizzi, Jonathan Cavender, Robbie Wright, Shane McDonald, Hito Steyerl, Ariella Azoulay, Paul Lowe, Goran Galic &amp; Gian-Reto Gredig, Laura Kurgan, Renzo Martens, Kadir van Lohuizen, Allan Sekula, Phil Collins, Walid Raad/The Atlas Group, Paul Fusco, Gilles Peress and Susan Meiselas. Compilations by Sohrab Mohebbi, Eyal Weizman, with Yazan Khalili and Tony Chakar.
The exhibition juxtaposes reportages by established Magnum practitioners with material from autonomous artists and even amateurs. The works can be viewed in a myriad of ways, from slide shows to YouTube films, from music videos to satellite imagery and archival material.
