Like many other students around me, when I first started photography I was greatly stimulated by photographers like Daido Moriyama, Takuma Nakahira, Kikuji Kawada, Nobuyoshi Araki andd Masahisa Fukase. Even if I wasn’t conscious of it, I was influenced by major Japanese groups like VIVO and Provoke. However, after I graduated from college, everything became digital, and I think that freed me up from this tradition.

Experimental Lake is set around a world-class research facility looking into human impact on nature. It is situated within the pristine natural environment of the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) in north-west Ontario, Canada. 58 lakes comprise a natural laboratory where a community of international scientists test the effect of new chemical substances and other human inventions on the environment. Their daily activities are monitored by Simoneau as a complex ecosystem in its own right, much like a scientist studies his specimen. Results from case-studies done in the ELA inform environmental policies worldwide. Similarly, Simoneau’s small observations speak of a universal interconnectedness between man and nature, as increasingly mediated through science – and photography.

Using his surroundings as an additive medium, Brandt’s printed photographs are bathed in a mixture of water collected from the site in which the composition was derived. Through this experimental process, the artist becomes closer to his specific subjects and gains a better understanding of his surroundings as a whole. This controlled technique mirrors the chemical composite of the photographed landscape and therefore symbolises today’s ecological concerns about the deterioration of our natural world.

A frail and twisted female body dissimulated behind pieces of paper: profoundly influenced by fashion and design, Ina Jang’s images are unconventional and light. She creates a complex and multidimensional world in which reality and fiction are intertwined using different surfaces and layers.

The base of Jang’s work is her experimental curiosity. Many of her images start with drawings or figures, which become obscured in surreal, hyper-stimulated environments. Jang’s goal is to find new perspectives in photography: "Coming up with something that completely breaks the boundaries might be impossible, but I think it’s always nice to try to break personal boundaries." With her conceptually and aesthetically playful approach to photography, Jang crafts her own visual language and creates light-hearted and poetic work.

The tenth episode of Foam Talks welcomes the Swiss artist Douglas Mandry, whose work is currently part of the Foam Talents 2020 exhibition. His work is characterized by his experimental use of historic photographic techniques and self-invented processes, through which he reconfigures depictions of our natural environment.

Foam produced this episode as part of a special series of podcasts on the occasion of Foam Talent 2020. Each episode focusses on one artist aiming to evoke a conversation around their approach, offer an insight into the discourses surrounding a specific project, contextualizing it within the photography field while not forgetting the personal stories and dreams behind it. The conversations are moderated by Mirjam Kooiman, curator of the Foam Talent 2020 exhibition.

Foam invites you to a musical evening inspired by the exhibition Fixing Shadows with visual artist Eric Gyamfi and composer Danny van de Lugt.

Music and Photography; this might seem like an unlikely combination at first. However, still images can most certainly contain music or sound. During this special evening image and sound will alternate each other. A conversation with the artist will be followed by a sonic performance by composer Danny van de Lugt.

Photographer Eric Gyamfi, born in Ghana, made the series Julius and I inspired by American minimal music composer, Julius Eastman. Gyamfi&rsquo;s most recent work plays with the notions around experimental compositions, repetitiveness and the fact that Eastman&rsquo;s compositions would contain theme&rsquo;s from previous pieces. In a similar fashion Gyamfi produces a countless number of variations of two images, where climate, amongs other circumstances, influenced the final outcome of his images, or more precisely; cyanotypes. The images are combined with whatsapp-messages narrated by his friends and even strangers, who explain the images in very different ways.
Danny van de Lugt, also known as Rural Juror, translates in his compositions non-audible data into sound. In previous projects Van de Lugt translated pictures and spaces into soundscapes. Van de Lugt enabled this by using an algorithm, which he wrote himself. After the performance both artists will reflect and respond to their respective works and the audience can join the conversation.

Resonance: Artist Talk & Sonic Performance

The Mai Man&oacute; House presents the exhibition Back to the Future. The 19th Century in the 21st Century. 

Spanning a dialogue between contemporary positions and those of the nineteenth century, the exhibition Back to the Future displays what the photographic medium was, what it is, and what it will be in the near future.&nbsp;

The current position of photography has much in common with the early years of the medium, when experiments with new photographic techniques were carried out on a grand scale. In a spirit of openness, excitement, freedom, curiosity and non-conformity, the nineteenth century pioneers of photography experimented with the technological and visual potential of the medium. They tested various methods and processes, but these were far from fully developed. Innovators with different backgrounds and from a variety of disciplines were looking for the best ways to capture the world. Taking pleasure in the making of images, and with a similar drive for experimentation, these early photographers shared a common mentality with many artists today.
The contemporary artists selected for the exhibition Back to the Future all use the foundations of photography: light, darkroom and chemistry, but in a non-traditional way. Each artist honours the history of the medium of photography by experimentally re-inventing it. The image is considered a material object with its own texture regardless of whether it is an analogue or digital object.
This exhibition is an initiative of Foam in collaboration with C/O Berlin, Germany.

Exclusively for Club Foam and Foam Fan+ members, Foam organises photography workshops in November based on the exhibition Masahisa Fukase - Private Scenes.

During the workshop, you will follow in the footsteps of Masahisa Fukase and make a series of experimental, biographical photographs using various materials. In a short assignment, you have your photo taken or photograph someone else, a still life or abstract image. You can print this on a small size, after which there are enough possibilities to add expression and apply materials to the photos.&nbsp; Think of sewing yarn, applying pins and emphasising composition by means of fine liners. The experiment is paramount. The workshop ends with discussing each other's work. In this way, you also learn from the photography of others and learn to recognise your own style. It is possible to bring one guest. This person pays the regular workshop rate of &euro; 50,-.
Foam provides&nbsp;<a href="https://www.olympus.nl/site/nl/c/cameras/om_d_system_cameras/om_d/e_m10/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Olympus OM-D</a>&nbsp;cameras for this workshop. Of course, you are free to use your own camera if you prefer. In that case, remember to bring a fully charged battery, an empty SD card, and a transfer cable. The use of your own materials is at your own risk.

No need to get bored during the autumn break: there is more than enough to do and see at Foam. Here are eight highlights from our public programmes:

Foam offers walk-in workshops inspired by the exhibition Masahisa Fukase - Private Scenes during the weekends, for all ages. In&nbsp;this walk-in workshop you will follow the footsteps of Masahisa Fukase by making an experimental, biographical photo by using various materials. Experiment with others with color, frame and composition to look for your personal style. FOTOBAAS <a href="/museum/visitor-information/for-kids"><img src="/userfiles/headers/museum/educatie/fotobaas_foam_foto_niels_moolenaar1.jpg" width="600" height="400" /></a> With this colourful camera in their hands, kids are instantly morphed into masters of photography or ''FotoBaas.'' During the autumn break, Foam is organising a photography workshop for children aged 8-12, inspired by the current exhibition Loading... Works from the Foam Collection. The workshop starts with an interactive tour of the exhibition. Afterwards, the pupils can start creating their own 17th century inspired photograph, based on the work methods of the artists in the exhibition. Paul Mpagi Sepuya (1982, US) explores the conventions of portrait photography and the role of the studio in his work.&nbsp;Sepuya&rsquo;s work is rooted in homoerotic visual culture. Friends, muses and intimates from the queer community are the subject of his work. His work is more than a dialogue of intimate relationships between the artist and those portrayed; it is also a visual exploration of ideas surrounding representation, identity and sexuality.

FOAM 3h: SENTA SIMOND | EXHIBITION <img src="https://a.storyblok.com/f/113697/3000x1800/c90cef132a/laurence_senta_simond_3000x1800.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="360" /> Laurence, 2016 &copy; Senta Simond / Courtesy Webber Gallery, London
Senta Simond's work focuses on an intimate approach to the female body and portraiture. Her photographs feature a circle of acquaintances and respond to existing, and too often clich&eacute;d, representation of femininity. Foam shows black-and-white as well as colour works including a tryptic of Simond&rsquo;s portraits in an intimate exhibition at Foam 3h, Foam&rsquo;s space for young photographers.
