Book launch | Afterlife by Vasantha Yogananthan

During the shortest and darkest days of the year, Gemeente Amsterdam and Foam Photography Museum Amsterdam present Visual Head, a video installation in the public space.

This year we are back at Het Stenen Hoofd with Standing in The Sun by photographer and director Viktor Naumovski.
Standing in The Sun is inspired by the emotional experience of growing up in a country in transition. It&rsquo;s an alternative narrative. This is a coming of age story focusing on a group of boys living in suburban Skopje, Macedonia. The nation&rsquo;s state of transition is explored from the boys&rsquo; perspective where masculinity and national pride are highly celebrated and admired.

The film is based on a time when the real and the imaginary folded neatly into one another. The boys spent their days playing in the dirt during Macedonia&rsquo;s passage from war to westernisation.
Standing in the Sun is screened without sound at Het Stenen Hoofd.
ABOUT VIKTOR NAUMOVSKI Viktor Naumovski (b.1996) is a Macedonian photographer and director based between Skopje and London. Born into a family with no artistic aspirations whatsoever, but with a lot of love and imagination, he spent his childhood playing with his family&rsquo;s animals in the suburbs of Skopje. This led to his artistic motivation and areas of interest. Heritage, family/intimate relationships, performed identity and representation all serve as a key to his self-exploration.
Throughout his career, Naumovski has presented his works with the likes of Foam Museum, Unseen Photo Festival and Rencontres d&rsquo;Arles, and has worked on commissions for clients including Louis Vuitton, JW Anderson, Gucci and Vogue Italia.

Standing in the Sun by Viktor Naumovski

This October, Foam and ADE join forces to present the work of Boris Postma. The exhibition brings together a selection of photographs from Postma's series Planet Core, in which he captures the unique aesthetic of one of the most original subscultures of recent decades: Gabber.

Gabber music is the black sheep of the Dutch music family. A total outsider, gabber is anti-culture, a pain in the ass of the mainstream. Gabber is crude, bold and raw. Gabber is fooling around. Gabber is pain. Gabber is steel. But Gabber is also unconditional companionship, love and affiliation, honour, pride and honesty. Gabber is family.
Artist and photographer Boris Postma has experienced Gabber like few others. He discovered gabbers and hardcore fans in Japan, Italy, and Germany and was welcomed into their local scenes. He ate, slept and hakte (the accompanying dance) with his new friends, recording their lives with love and dedication. In a nuanced manner, Boris not only focuses on the sometimes extreme and sensational visual identity of this subculture, but strives to show the human side of it.&nbsp;

ABOUT BORIS POSTMA Boris Postma (1985) lives and works in Amsterdam. In his work, Postma explores identity in a world which aggressively bombards us with pop culture, brands, and lifestyles. By studying aspects and behaviours within subcultures and social groups, Postma hopes to create understanding and recognition for those who are usually condemned. He has participated in exhibitions in Paris, Zurich, Toronto and Milan, researched the local hardcore history for Art Rotterdam, and functioned as a gabber oracle for Nike. Postma&rsquo;s editorial photography work has been published by international publications including Boiler Room, Dazed &amp; Confused, i-D Magazine, Indie Magazine,&nbsp;and Vice Magazine. In addition, he has contributed with pictures and articles to the Thunderdome 25 year jubilee book.
The prints in the exhibition are produced by Kleurgamma.

ADE X Foam: Planet Core by Boris Postma

Foam proudly presents&nbsp;Fixing Shadows,&nbsp;an exhibition of the work of Eric Gyamfi (1990, GH), the artist selected by an international jury as the winner of the&nbsp;Foam Paul Huf Award 2019.
Eric Gyamfi uses storytelling to position his own past into a more universal experience of belonging. His self-portraits and quasi-diaristic installations about his own nomadic existence are deeply personal, yet transcend his individual experience. The artist employs an array of visual methods to recount memories that hover somewhere between autobiography and fiction. His work consists of collages, writings, sound and prints that were developed using various processes, such as cyanotype and screen-printing.
At the invitation of Foam, Gyamfi translated his scrapbook-aesthetic onto the museum walls. The resulting installations make us reconsider the meaning of a photographic image as a record of the truth or the externalization of personal memory. Instead, the photograph is presented as a powerful but deeply ambiguous tool to recount and reinvent stories &ndash; be they true or false.

From September onwards Foam will exhibit the first retrospective of Brassa&iuml; in the Netherlands. This French photographer of Hungarian descent is considered as one of the key figures of 20th-century photography. Brassa&iuml; (1899- 1984) created countless iconic images of 1930s Parisian life. He was famous for capturing the grittier aspects of the city, but also documented high society, including the ballet, opera, and intellectuals - among them his friends and contemporaries like Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dal&iacute; and Henri Matisse.&nbsp;

Foam proudly presents 43-35 10th Street an exhibition of the work of Daniel Shea (1985, US), who is selected by an international jury as the winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award 2018.

Daniel Shea was awarded the twelfth Foam Paul Huf Award for his work in which he presents a seductive and disconcerting world of concrete, steel and glass, which traverses the boundaries of fact and fiction.&nbsp;His cityscapes are poetic and timeless, yet they address the very real effects of capitalism on the urban landscape &ndash; and society at large. The title of his latest project 43-35 10th Street refers to his studio address in Long Island City: a residential neighbourhood in New York City that is rapidly gentrifying. However, Shea&rsquo;s construction wastelands could have been (and in fact were) photographed anywhere in the world. Layering photographs from different times and places, the series transcends the local scale and addresses developments that affect cities globally.

Shea&rsquo;s belief that the built environment profoundly affects society, and vice versa, also informs his own practice. He often lets his compositions bleed onto their mount, or etches architectural blueprints into the glass of the frame. This deliberate use of materials gives his work an almost sculptural quality and emphasises the incongruity between an imagined utopia, and a sometimes dystopian reality.

In his personal projects, he has addressed urbanization and industry, and particularly the effects of their decline on landscape and community. Shea lives and works in New York.&nbsp;

Daniel Shea

Foam proudly presents The Following is a True Story, an exhibition of the work of Romain Mader (1988, Switzerland). Mader was chosen by an international jury as the winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award 2017.

Mader won the Foam Paul Huf Award for his series Ekaterina, depicting the search for a bride in a fictitious city in the Ukraine. The series is part of the exhibition, which consists of several projects that jointly form a narrative about a naive young man in search of happiness. Mader plays with the tension between reality and fiction. His work stands out for the humour and irony with which he addresses serious topics such as loneliness, love, exploitation and the female body. Beneath the seeming superficiality of his images, his work contains many layers that can be interpreted in various ways.

Mader plays a subtle game with what we believe to be true &ndash; a game with which he confronts us with our own assumptions and prejudices. In this day and age, of &lsquo;fake news&rsquo; and idealised user profiles on social media, Mader&rsquo;s work demonstrates that the frequently asked question about the truthfulness of photography is still a relevant one.
ABOUT ROMAIN MADER Romain Mader (1988, Switzerland) studied photography at ECAL in Lausanne, Switzerland, and will complete his Master&rsquo;s in Fine Arts in Z&uuml;rich this year. He came to international attention after his work was featured in the 2016 group exhibition Performing for the Camera in London&rsquo;s Tate Modern. This coincided with the publication of the book Ekaterina (M&ouml;rel Books). Mader&rsquo;s work has been included in several international group exhibitions, and he has also had a number of solo exhibitions in his home country of Switzerland. Foam is now hosting his first international solo exhibition. Starting in 2012, Mader has regularly collaborated with artist Nadja Kilchhofer.

The Following is a True Story offers a chronological overview of Romain Mader&rsquo;s attempts to find happiness. In the series Moi Avec Des Filles (2009), Mader tries to create the impression that he is quite a ladies&rsquo; man by posing with attractive hostesses at a car show. In De Nouveaux Amies (2011) he undertakes very awkward attempts to make new friends by posing with apparently random groups of people on the beach. He then decides to take serious action by deploying a &lsquo;wingman&rsquo; to help him get a girlfriend, as depicted in the slide show The Girlfriend Experience (2012-17). After a brief affair with Priscillia, it is time to find a female companion fit to be his wife. The series Ekatarina shows the episode in which he travels to the fantasy city of Ekatarina, which is mysteriously inhabited by only women who are all named Ekatarina. After he finds his own Ekatarina, he asks her to marry him at the foot of the Matterhorn in his home country of Switzerland. In addition to the photographs, the story is also told by means of a video consisting of a slide show with the artist&rsquo;s voice-over, reporting on his amorous adventure. The exhibition ends with his most recent work, Honeymoon (2017): a video documenting his honeymoon in which Mader promises his brand new wife a two-week stay in a honeymoon suite, but in the end the couple spend three months travelling like hillbillies through an economically ravaged Greece. Romain Mader

Erik Kessels has a preference for the imperfect and the incomplete. His latest book The Many Lives of Erik Kessels is the highly anticipated first illustrated survey of the curator, editor, artist and publicist.

It&rsquo;s a mid-career retrospective on how to look - and how to better understand the hybrid practice of this artist who defies categorization. Kessels' varied experiments with photography and photographic archives have allowed reconsidering the medium&rsquo;s vernacular and narrative possibilities.&nbsp;

Japanese photographer Daisuke Yokota and Tomoko Mukaiyama, the Japanese renowned pianist/performer based in Amsterdam will have their first joint performance In a Landscape on the occasion of <a href="/museum/programme/daisuke-yokota">Matter</a>, Yokota&rsquo;s solo exhibition at Foam.

As an opening event in the first weekend of <a href="/museum/programme/daisuke-yokota">Matter</a>, the performance In a Landscape takes place in the exhibition room where Tomoko will be playing piano as a part of the installation. Daisuke will create brand new video work for the performance, which makes the collaboration an artistic fusion of music and the photographic medium. The collaboration will be a premiere and only performed on one single night. Due to the size of the piano and the installation, a limited number of tickets (30) is available for the performance.
DAISUKE YOKOTA Born in 1983, Saitama, Yokota majored in photography at Nippon Photography Institute in Tokyo. As the winner of the first Outset | Unseen Exhibition Fund at Unseen Photo Fair 2013, Yokota presented a solo exhibition at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam in 2014. In the same year, his photography book VERTIGO was nominated for the Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards. In 2015, he performed at Shashin: Photography from Japan (New York), and participated in In the Wake: Japanese Photographers Respond to 3/11 (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), Another Language&nbsp;(Rencontres d&rsquo;Arles) and Trans-Tokyo / Trans-Photo, Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival in China. Yokota's work is included in public collections of Foam, Boston Museum, SFMOMA. In 2016 he received the Foam Paul Huf Award from an international jury. TOMOKO MUKAIYAMA Tomoko Mukaiyama is a Dutch-Japanese pianist, performer and visual artist based in Amsterdam. She studied piano in Tokyo, Indiana (US) and Amsterdam, after which she made her concert debut in 1990. A year later she won the prestigious Dutch Gaudeamus competition. As a pianist, Tomoko is praised for her vivid interpretations of historical as well as modern compositions. Many prestigious orchestras and ensembles throughout the world have engaged her, including the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, the London Sinfonietta, the Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Her latest performances are La Mode (National Theater in Taichung, 2016), HOME (Saitama Triennle, Japan, 2016) and Jiř&iacute; Kyli&aacute;n&rsquo;s Tar and Feathers (Opera Garnier, Paris, 2016). World-renowned photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, Jop van Bennekom and Gert Jonkers, founders of Fantastic Man, developed campaign posters with a statement: a message of unity. 

Starting&nbsp;Thursday 9 March visitors can collect the campaign posters, free of charge, at Foam in Amsterdam. Foam is collaborating with Wolfgang Tillmans and the Fantastic Man founders for his Protect the European Union&nbsp;campaign: a series of freely available posters. DEMOCRACY, NEGOTIATION AND MODERATION The campaign flows from Tillman&rsquo;s campaign against the <a href="http://tillmans.co.uk/campaign-eu">Brexit</a> in the spring of 2016. This EU Campaign expressed his worries with a combination of what he described as the &lsquo;lame&rsquo; campaign for &lsquo;Remain&rsquo;, along with a lack of registered and active young voters. He himself stands firmly in favour of the EU. As a German citizen who splits his time between London and Berlin, he sees a looming &lsquo;abyss&rsquo; of rage and nationalism that threatens &ldquo;the very institutions of democracy, negotiation and moderation that allow us to live the lives we are living.&rdquo; These sentiments &ndash; veiled with the guise of extreme patriotism &ndash; have only grown more pronounced since America elected Donald J. Trump as president. Refusing to hang up his hat after the &lsquo;leave&rsquo; vote prevailed in the UK, Tillmans remains actively committed to the idea of a united, democratic Europe and a European Union. Inspired by his campaign, Jop van Bennekom and Gert Jonkers (founders of Fantastic Man) have adapted his posters for the upcoming Dutch elections on 15 March. <a href="http://tillmans.co.uk/images/stories/protecteuropeanunion/EU_ENG%202017_HIGH%20RES_A3.pdf"><img src="https://a.storyblok.com/f/113697/595x442/a6e5f66624/595_protecttheeu_installation_foammarch2017.jpg" alt="" width="595" height="441" /> </a>The posters &ndash; five different ones, in four languages &ndash; will be displayed in a large collage in one of Foam's gallery halls. A selection of posters has been printed for museum visitors to take freely. As shown in 2015, when Foam supported <a href="https://www.foam.org/museum/programme/legosforweiwei">Ai Weiwei and his endeavor</a>&nbsp;to fight for freedom of speech and artistic expression, Foam firmly believes in the power of artistic expression to convey and promote important messages. The collaborating partners in the Protect the European Union project are De Balie (Amsterdam), Foam (Amsterdam), Cookies, Het Nieuwe Instituut and Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (Rotterdam). They will be distributing Tillmans&rsquo; poster - and with that, his message.&nbsp;

This year, Foam's popularity grows exponentially: from 107.000 visitors in 2008 to 190.000 in 2009. This has to do with fan favourites like Richard Avedon and Alexander Rodchenko, but also with cutting-edge exhibitions like Prune - abstracting reality. Young talent gets a spotlight in Foam 3h and the Foam Talent Issue.

Richard Avedon (1923 &ndash; 2004) was a legend in his own lifetime, and remains one of the leading photographers of the twentieth century. Rather than portray famous figures in stiff, conventional poses, Avedon&rsquo;s powerful, subjective manner penetrated the personality of his subject. The exhibition features over 200 works and demonstrates the range of Avedon&rsquo;s unique vision: from the many portraits of public figures, his ten-metre-long work The Factory, a selection from his famous In the American West series, to photos taken shortly before his death in 2004.

The Italian photographer Massimo Vitali rose to fame in the late 1990s with large-format colour photos of crowded Italian beaches. With his exceptional eye for detail, Vitali observes what ordinary people do. He is fascinated by recreation, leisure and the holiday atmosphere. Using a large-format camera and taking an elevated perspective gives the artist an extremely wide view and at the same time an exceptionally detailed picture.

In Avenue Patrice Lumumba, Guy Tillim focuses on the modernist architecture that emerged in countries like Congo, Mozambique, Madagascar, Angola and Benin shortly after they became independent. Many African towns have streets and squares named after Patrice Lumumba, the politician who won the Congolese elections in 1960, when the country gained independence from Belgium.. Charlotte Dumas makes serene, intimate portraits of animals. Shown here in a single exhibition, a new relationship emerges between the portraits of horses, wolves, tigers and other animals. Dumas prefers to photograph animals with a close connection to humans and whom fulfil an important role for us: animals that have been tamed or trained by humans and which serve a particular purpose, whether in an actual task or by their appearance.

In the relatively short period of time that Sanne Sannes (1937-1967) worked as a photographer, he managed to build up a unique portfolio. His obsession with the erotic force of the female was overpowering. Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956) is one of the great innovators of twentieth-century avant-garde art and one of its most versatile practitioners. Having first gained international acclaim as a painter, sculptor and graphic designer, Rodchenko took up the practice of photography in the early 1920s, convinced that it would become the artistic medium of his era. The exhibition contains more than 200 vintage photographs, some of which have never been exhibited in the West before.

2009: Year in Review

Have your portrait taken on tintype or ambrotype: photographic techniques that use the same process as the Marubi photo studio.

On Saturday 26 November you can have your portrait taken by <a href="http://www.tintypestudio.nl/" target="_blank">The Tintype Studio</a>. In their&nbsp;mobile studio, image-makers Went &amp; Navarro&nbsp;use the same collodion <a href="https://vimeo.com/33893964" target="_blank">wet plate</a> technique as Pietro Marubi in 1850.
This technique gets its name from the fact that it involves the use of wet chemicals. The collodion wet plate process requires the photographic material to be coated, sensitised, exposed &ndash; before the collodion has a&nbsp;chance to set and dry &ndash; and developed within the span of about ten minutes. Within their mobile studio The Tintype Studio&nbsp;creates incredible compelling images, on glass (Ambrotype) or on aluminium or tin (Tintypes).

Tintype Photo Studio

Open See records experiences of people who have left the war-torn social and economic chaos of their native country in the hope of building a better life in Europe.

These &lsquo;New Europeans&rsquo;, originally from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East often find themselves confronting a new kind of aggression and cruelty, yet continue to believe in a brighter future. Open See, the title, refers to the absence of borders on the open sea, in contrast to the national frontiers that still divide Europe, despite its so-called unification.
Jim Goldberg&rsquo;s work is characterised by a powerful sense of involvement with individuals on the margins of society. He often uses text as an essential part of his compositions. Goldberg examines different aspects of this complex subject using various mediums, such as polaroids, video, diary fragments, objects and medium and large-format photos. Many of the photos are written on, coloured-in or scratched by the person portrayed. Together, the words and pictures form an intimate, fascinating story of the life of his subjects.
ABOUT JIM GOLDBERG Jim Goldberg began his New Europeans project in 2004, commissioned by Magnum Photo collective. This followed the Greek Olympic Games, when Goldberg explored the daily life of immigrants in Greece who had fled war, disease and poverty in their homeland.&nbsp;
In 2007, Goldberg won the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award. This enabled him to finance trips to the countries that the migrants had left and to view the circumstances that had prompted them to make their journey. That is how Open See came about, in which Goldberg expands his focus to look at immigration and human trafficking in other European countries.
In the tradition of documentary photographers like&nbsp;Walker Evans and Robert Frank, Goldberg seeks to photograph people and their social position. He began experimenting with combinations of words and pictures in his now-classic series <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2014/jul/03/jim-goldberg-rich-and-poor-photography" target="_blank">Rich and Poor</a>&nbsp;(1977&ndash;1985), which looks at the differences in America&rsquo;s class system. In <a href="https://pro.magnumphotos.com/Package/2K7O3RB0IRNS" target="_blank">Raised by Wolves</a>&nbsp;(1985&ndash;1995) Goldberg documented a group of homeless boys in Los Angeles and San Francisco.&nbsp;

Photography students at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie were challenged to make work with the title Teenage Magazines. 

The result is a magazine with work as provocative as it is poetic and intimate.&nbsp;This work is shown&nbsp;on Foam&rsquo;s walls in the form of an enlarged magazine dummy and was&nbsp;published as a magazine.&nbsp;
In 70 prints, 35 students from the Photography Department reveal the zeitgeist of their generation. The basic theme of the exhibition is Teenage Magazines, which has been broadly interpreted. The results vary from stand-alone images to short series in which the images&rsquo; relationship to its context, a magazine, provides the essential framework. The autonomous character of the department is clearly visible in the exhibition, which contains still lifes, nudes, family portraits, reproductions and form experiments.
It is part of the philosophy of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie for students to move beyond the walls of the institution at an early stage in their education. The Photography Department of this academy is known as a major breeding ground for talent and has produced many internationally recognised photographers including Rineke Dijkstra, Inez van Lamsweerde, Charlotte Dumas, Julika Rudelius and Hellen van Meene.

Teenage Magazines

In Set Amsterdam by Dana Lixenberg, Amsterdam is depicted as a kind of film set, fashioned by its current and former residents. 

Dana Lixenberg portrays the city in a series of landscapes and interiors. The absence of people in the images turns the viewer&rsquo;s gaze to the space itself and to the myriad details which define these environments. In Set Amsterdam only traces of human activity hint at inhabitants and at lives fully lived.&nbsp;
Lixenberg was inspired to create these photographs after being commissioned to create actors&rsquo; portraits for the eight-part television series A'dam - E.v.a. (Amsterdam and many others). Her work on the series guided Lixenberg to locations previously inconspicuous to her, such as a former bomb shelter, a Ghanaian church, cemeteries, a morgue, Amsterdam&rsquo;s garbage incinerator and other public and private spaces.
Lixenberg sought environments imparting a sense of transience that bear witness to the human stamp of its former residents. She also photographed spaces still filled with life and which, through subtle attention to detail and atmosphere, evoke a way of life.
ABOUT DANA LIXENBERG Dana Lixenberg is a leading Dutch photographer whose work has been published in photo books and in international magazines. She has also exhibited work at major museums in the Netherlands and throughout the world.

Dana Lixenberg

New methods of reporting the news, new imaginations of what the news might be, have given birth to the most interesting ideas. This critical approach is called, following Allan Sekula, &lsquo;antiphotojournalism&rsquo;.

Photojournalism is in the midst of a remarkable, and singularly unexpected, renaissance. New practices, strategies, viewpoints, techniques, and agents have radically transformed the institutions and the fundamental concepts of the field. Whilst it has become fashionable to lament the death of photojournalism, actual events suggest that something quite different is taking place.
Antiphotojournalism provides a profound and passionate fidelity to the image, unleashed from the demands of the traditional approach of photojournalism. It has a multiplicity of forms, such as film, video, slides, web-based presentations and many more. It is freed to ask other questions, to make other claims, to tell other stories.
Sometimes the gesture is reflective. Sometimes the desire is evidentiary not in the old sense of simply offering the &lsquo;evidence&rsquo; of images to an assumedly homogenous public opinion, but in a much more precise way: photographs have become evidence in war crimes tribunals. Sometimes the innovation is technological, whether it involves working with the hi-tech resources of advanced satellite imagery or the low-tech crowd-sourcing of participatory protest imaging. Sometimes the practices are archival. And sometimes the question is simply whether we even need images at all.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION The group exhibition Antiphotojournalism charts new developments in exciting ways. Included is work by Broomberg &amp; Chanarin, Mauro Andrizzi, Jonathan Cavender, Robbie Wright, Shane McDonald, Hito Steyerl, Ariella Azoulay, Paul Lowe, Goran Galic &amp; Gian-Reto Gredig, Laura Kurgan, Renzo Martens, Kadir van Lohuizen, Allan Sekula, Phil Collins, Walid Raad/The Atlas Group, Paul Fusco, Gilles Peress and Susan Meiselas. Compilations by Sohrab Mohebbi, Eyal Weizman, with Yazan Khalili and Tony Chakar.
The exhibition juxtaposes reportages by established Magnum practitioners with material from autonomous artists and even amateurs. The works can be viewed in a myriad of ways, from slide shows to YouTube films, from music videos to satellite imagery and archival material.

Antiphotojournalism

Foam&rsquo;s prescence at the Uitmarkt is all about the museum&rsquo;s autumn exhibitions, highlighting <a href="/museum/programme/ai-weiwei">Ai Weiwei - #SafePassage</a>, opening on 15 September.

The exhibition <a href="/museum/programme/ai-weiwei">#SafePassage</a> will deal with the fate of the individual versus the overruling systems of society, through the eyes of world renowed Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei (1957, China). Our staff will also inform you about the exceptional portraits by <a href="/museum/programme/dynasty-marubi">Marubi</a>, Melanie Bonajo&rsquo;s trilogy <a href="/museum/programme/melanie-bonajo">Night Soil</a>&nbsp;and the fascination that artist <a href="/museum/programme/foam-3h-olya-oleinic">Olya Oleinic</a> has for the Chinese&nbsp;consumption culture, all to be exhibited from 16 September on at Foam. In the Uitmarkt stand of Foam, visitors can portrait themselves on Saturday and Sunday (11.00 &ndash; 18 hrs.), expressing their wish for a safe passage to the many refugees who are risking their lives for a better life in Europe. Foam processes the photos and will make them available for you from Monday on.

Ai Weiwei Camps&nbsp; ABOUT&nbsp;THE EXHIBITION In the exhibition, Ai Weiwei shares his personal experiences as a refugee of the Chinese Government, and feels close related to the hundreds of thousands refugees and migrants who risked their lives to reach Europe, only to find their path barred by a succession of border closures. Alongside marble sculptures and films, Weiwei will cover the walls of Foam with thousands of photographs taken on his mobile phone. This immense collage will reflect on all the personal encounters the artist has had with individuals and the tragic situation unfolding in the Mediterranean, bringing to our attention what is, in his own words, "the biggest, most shameful humanitarian crisis since World War II". It is the largest annual festival in the country, officially launching the new cultural season by showcasing the very best in music, art, theatre, dance, opera, literature and cabaret performances. Women are central in Helmut Newton&acute;s highly versatile oeuvre. Newton adored women, especially powerful, sensual and seductive women. At the same time Newton&acute;s women have something cold, distant and detached about them. They are sometimes more stylized objects than beings made of flesh and blood. It is this mise-en-scene in which Newton puts his subjects that often creates an ambiguous story.
His&nbsp;particular fascination for women, the imagination of women as a dominant force that is both attractive and frightening, and the complex psychological power play around gender relations are reminiscent of the obsessive way certain surrealist artists such as Hans Bellmer and Salvador Dal&iacute; approached the subject.
The tour with Mirjam Kooiman&nbsp;delves deeper into the way women are portrayed in surrealism, the place they occupy in the work of certain surrealist artists and the often complex meanings of eroticism, sexuality, power, violence and voyeurism within&nbsp;the oeuvre of Helmut Newton.
MIRJAM KOOIMAN | 2 SEPTEMBER&nbsp; Mirjam Kooiman (b. 1990, NL) is a curator at Foam, where she has worked on shows including Helmut Newton: A Retrospective, Magnum Contact Sheets as well as the traveling Foam Talent 2015 exhibition. She holds a BA in Art History and a MA in Museum Curation from the University of Amsterdam, with a special interest in postcolonial approaches in the arts and museum studies. She previously served as a curator in training at the photography collection of Amsterdam&rsquo;s Stedelijk Museum.
PROGRAMME The guided tour&nbsp;Speak out&nbsp;takes place on Friday evenings and starts at 19.00 at Foam. Reservation is required for participation. The tours will be given in Dutch and there are 20 spots available per tour. Cost: &euro; 7,- (admission excluded).

On September 15 you are welcome for the public opening of four new exhibitions.

Following the major summer exhibition Helmut Newton &ndash; A Retrospective, Foam presents four new exhibitions from 16 September onwards. Exceptional portraits by studio photographer Marubi will travel from Albania to Amsterdam and world-renowned contemporary artist and activist Ai Weiwei is about to show his latest work in the rooms of Foam. Dutch artist Melanie Bonajo is selected for the second exhibition in the <a href="/about/collaborative-projects/next-level">Next Level</a>&nbsp;series and will present her trilogy Night Soil for the first time. In <a href="/talent/foam-3h">Foam 3h</a>, the talented Olya Oleinic exhibits her new work, created from her fascination for one of modern days leading drivers of consumerism: China.

Helmut Newton's photography has been subject to all manner of misinterpretation, especially in the 1970's when the women's movement stated fashion photography in general, particularly those of unclothed women taken by men, as victimizing. But Newton rebelled against the traditional, subservient women he found in fashion magazines and flipped the expected gender roles . His women were strong, dangerous and in charge of their sexuality. Newton created his world, where women are the stronger sex and men are largely dependent on their good will. OLGA KORTZ | 26 AUGUST Newton&rsquo;s work certainly is a direct result of socio-political changes in the sixties and seventies: shifting power relations, emerging emancipation and a much freer sexual morality. His photography reflects and popularized the influence of fashion designs, such as &lsquo;Le Smoking&rsquo; by Yves Saint Laurent. The tuxedo suit for women empowered women, by creating the option to wear the same clothing as men with power and influence. During the guided tour Olga will take you on a search for silent desires, to talk about women empowerment and points out the animals who seem to be quite well represented in the exhibition.

ABOUT OLGA KORTZ Olga Kortz is a writer and the editor in chief of i-D Netherlands. i-D is the VICE-platform dedicated to all things fashion, art, identity and subcultures. In the past she has been the editor in chief of Hard//Hoofd en has worked for publications varying form Hollands Maandblad to HP/De Tijd and from Hard Gras to Linda. In 2014 she was awarded the debutants&rsquo; scholarship by Hollands Maandblad, winning in the categories for poetry as well as prose.&nbsp;
