In Search of Perfect Orange. About the work of Benjamin Li

. A group exhibition showcasing work of an extraordinary new wave of image-makers shaping the future of photography. This year’s exhibition features the work of 15 extraordinary artists, chosen from nearly 3,000 submissions from 107 countries.  

Through the use of powerful visual language, their works often connect to a notion of belonging; the search for a safe space, whether found within the home, family, community, or a sense of place, is an underlying thread that surfaces in different ways.

 From intimate portraits to sweeping visual narratives, each piece invites you to see the world through a new lens.

Alongside the Foam Talent group exhibition in Amsterdam, the selected artists’ work will be presented across multiple Foam platforms, offering international visibility: through a travelling presentation at the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation in Frankfurt, a dedicated issue of Foam Magazine, and features on our digital platform.

Get ready for a kids workshop full of fun, creativity, and colour during the May holidays!

In this workshop, children explore the playful and colourful world of photographer Martin Parr. With a camera in hand, they go on a little adventure in and around the museum, looking for funny, colourful, and unusual moments on the streets of Amsterdam. They learn to look at the world through the lens of Martin Parr.

After taking photos, all the pictures are brought together into one big group collage. With the help of AI, the collage becomes a unique colouring page that children can bring to life with colour and their own imagination.

 returns to Foam on Thursday 12 February for a special evening in celebration of her book

. The photobook is the first monograph on the work of Van Rij. It immerses the reader in her entire oeuvre, bringing together her black-and-white and colour photography, as well as the collages created since 2018, and in doing so charts the journey from her beginnings as a photographer to her most recent work.

The event in Foam's in-house gallery will start with a talk between the artist and

, creative strategist, curator and co-founder of 

about Van Rij's career and book. Van Marle is a close friend of Van Rij, and alongside their personal bond they maintain an ongoing dialogue on artistic processes and the cross-over between photography and other art forms, which they will continue during the event at Foam.

After the talk, there will be the opportunity to have the book signed by the artist.

Voortgezet Onderwijs - Workshop - GET (SUR)REAL!

 is the well-known Photoshop selection tool of the same name. For Xin Li, the tool is much more than a handy feature to edit images. It becomes a means to draw parallels with societal control and censorship during the COVID lockdowns in China.  

The magic wand tool selects areas of images based on colour and hue—allowing smart selection and quick manipulation of images. Enforced with machine learning, it nowadays easily predicts which objects a user would like to see selected. Xin Li uses the tool to distort images, obscuring their original meaning behind layers of other images, often of other artworks.  

For Xin Li, this process symbolises the mechanisms of hiding and revealing facts and fake news, regulating the flow of information and controlling the dominant narrative. Metaphorically captured in the overwhelming fusion of shapes and colours, the visually explosive works tempt the viewer to look what lies beneath the apparent chaos. 

Stuck at home during the COVID-19 lockdown, Shwe Wutt Hmon was unable to visit the hospital for her regular check-ups and scans, necessary because of a life-long health issue. Coming to terms with this limitation, she started scanning her body, as well as flowers and medical records, by herself with an ordinary at-home scanner, creating a variety of abstract self-portraits. 

 that emerged from these experiments, reveal a poetic and symbolic documentation of the ongoing assault of medical procedures and operations on her body. Hmon’s image-making practice strongly ties together process and concept: the withering flowers symbolise the decay of the body and dark colours reflect somber emotions experienced right before scheduled operations.  

Another dimension was added when she moved from Myanmar to Thailand in 2022. Printing her work on local Saa paper, the works received an almost skin-like texture. Again, restrictions–this time due to the delicate paper type–required her to improvise, causing her to print the works small scale at home. The final accumulated process turned out to present a healing capacity: by carefully printing, cutting and sewing her works together, Shwe ultimately was also mending herself.
