In his Dialect series, Romero Beltrán works with young people who have illegally crossed the maritime border between Morocco and Spain and are waiting for their migratory status to be resolved in Seville. The photographs are explorations of these young people's experiences, in which the body engages in dialogue with their memories and the time spent waiting in the migratory centre.

Lebohang Kganye’s (SA) work utilises the photographic medium to narrate and imagine a new history. Her work was chosen by a jury of five industry specialists out of around 100 nominees. The Foam Paul Huf Award is presented annually to an upcoming photography talent to encourage photographers in their artistic development.

Reflecting on personal narratives, memory, family, loss, displacement and dislocation while questioning photography’s indexicality as a marker of truth, Lebohang Kganye’s work impressed us for its clarity of vision, complexity and ambition.

John Edmonds is the fifteenth winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award

Daniel Shea (1985, US) is the winner of the twelfth Foam Paul Huf Award. This annual prize, given to a photography talent under 35 years, consists of &euro;20.000 and an exhibition in Foam.

The jury chose Daniel Shea from a pool of 100 nominated photographers, from 20 countries worldwide.&nbsp;
The jury report states:
<blockquote>
&rdquo;In a profoundly strong and varied list of international artists, the quality and consistency of Daniel Shea&rsquo;s subjective visual idiom, greatly impressed the jury. Using a variety of visual mediums, Shea&rsquo;s work explores the complexity and ambiguities of urban development in his home city, New York. Drawing from his experience as a commercial photographer, Shea presents us with a seductive and disconcerting world of concrete, steel and glass, which traverses the boundaries of fact and fiction. His latest body of work &lsquo;43-35 10th Street&rsquo;, allows us to reflect on late capitalism and its effects on a changing city landscape.&rdquo;

The Foam Paul Huf Award came about as a result of the special relationship Foam had with Dutch photographer Paul Huf (1924-2002). Paul Huf was known for his innovative photographic technique and he was an important ambassador for the establishment of Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam in 2001.&nbsp;
Foam is supported by the BankGiro Loterij, De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, Gemeente Amsterdam, Olympus and the VandenEnde Foundation.

On 8 March 2018, the winner of this year&rsquo;s Foam Paul Huf Award, the international photography award for young artists, will be announced.

The international jury will meet in Amsterdam on 7 and 8 March to choose a winner from portfolios submitted by one hundred photographers nominated from around the world. The prize is awarded annually by Foam to an international photographic talent under the age of 35 and consists of &euro;20,000 and an exhibition at Foam.

To produce an internationally representative selection Foam approached around twenty nominators in various parts of the world. These nominators, specialists, and experts in the field of photography were each asked to select a number of talented photographers under the age of 35 in their own region. The award can be presented for any type of photography: from documentary or applied photography to journalistic or independent work. The winner&rsquo;s work must exhibit a clear visual language and distinguish itself in both form and content.
The Foam Paul Huf Award came about as a result of the special relationship Foam had with Dutch photographer Paul Huf (1924-2002). Paul Huf was known for his innovative photographic technique and was personally involved in the establishment of Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam in 2001.

Foam Paul Huf Award 2018

Romain Mader (1988, Switzerland) is the winner of the eleventh Foam Paul Huf Award 2017. This annual prize, given to a photography talent under 35 years, consists of €20.000 and an exhibition in Foam.

The jury chose Romain Mader from a pool of 100 nominated photographers, from 25 countries worldwide. Mader wins the prize for his series Ekaterina, a narrative in which he seeks a bride in the imaginary city of Ekaterina.

“Romain Mader’s Ekatarina is notable for the humour and irony with which he addresses serious issues: solitude, love, exploitation and the female body. In this Chinese box of a project, each layer opens to reveal a new interpretive possibility. What is real here, and what is fiction? In the invented Ukrainian town of Ekaterina, mysteriously populated only by women, Mader - or the character he plays - looks for love. Unremarkable in appearance, he spends time with aspiring models and beauty queen hopefuls, frozen behind their smiles. In a slick style familiar from commercial snapshots, social media and tourist material, we are drawn into a world of exploited women, mail-order brides, sexual tourism, and pervasive media attention. But Mader’s depiction is funny, naive, absurd, light-hearted, and it is this contrast between the subject and its exploration that gives Ekaterina its unexpectedly moving power." The jury was delighted to recognize Romain Mader’s already completed work as well as his significant promise with the 2017 Foam Paul Huf Award. "We strongly believe that he is an artist of remarkable sensibility and subtlety, and that he is destined to be a notable voice in contemporary photography.”

The Foam Paul Huf Award is being organised for the eleventh time. The&nbsp;<a href="#winners">list of former winners</a>&nbsp;is quite impressive. In 2016 the jury chose&nbsp;<a href="/museum/programme/daisuke-yokota">Daisuke Yokota</a>&nbsp;(Japan) as the tenth winner of the prize, in recognition of his complex, sophisticated practice. Foam Paul Huf Award 2017

Japanese photographer Daisuke Yokota (b. 1983 Saitama) is the winner of the tenth Foam Paul Huf Award 2016. This annual prize, given to a photography talent under 35 years, consists of &euro;20.000 and an exhibition in Foam.

The jury chose Daisuke Yokota from a pool of 97 nominated photographers, from 29 countries worldwide.

Romain Mader’s Ekatarina is notable for the humour and irony with which he addresses serious issues: solitude, love, exploitation and the female body. In this Chinese box of a project, each layer opens to reveal a new interpretive possibility. What is real here, and what is fiction?

This selfie depicts Romain Mader with his wife: it’s the end of the artist’s alter ego’s search of a wife. He started his mission in Ukraine, in an imaginary city mysteriously populated only by women, all named Ekaterina, and each hoping to find a rich western husband. In an utterly naïve narration by Romain about his search for the one and only Ekaterina, a series of stereotypes take the stage, from Mader performing as an oblivious western sex tourist, to interchangeable Ukrainian brides, up to the “typical” Soviet backdrop to the whole quest for love. The gap between preconceived ideas about a place like Ukraine and its reality is what is constantly exploited to the point of absurdity in Mader’s work. In a photographic language that perfectly employs the conventions of documentary photography, the confusion between what is fictitious and what is real – or what seems real – ultimately arises as a goal in itself.
