The work of Viviane Sassen (Amsterdam, 1972) stands out by the expressiveness of color, the unique use of shadows and the slightly surrealistic atmosphere. She intuitively approaches her models, who almost become sculptures in her images. Her intriguing play with perception, form, color and shadow has also made her a leading fashion photographer, in addition to her autonomous work.

During this masterclass, two experts, Freek Kuin and Corinne Noordenbos, will elaborate on the topic of collecting photobooks.

In addition to collecting photo prints, collecting photobooks is a great way to engage in photography and build a valuable collection. First editions, last or signed copies, special editions with photo prints - these are all books that can be of great value. Two speakers will be elaborate on this topic during the masterclass on Wednesday 19 June.
Freek Kuin, photobook-maker and creative director at publisher Rob Stolk, will kick-off the evening drawing from his extensive experience publishing photobooks. He will talk about a number of his prize-winning publications and about the creative process. From concept to design, and all the ingredients in between that make a good photobook.

After a short break, Corinne Noordenbos, an important collector of photo albums, will take over. As a photographer and former head of the Photography Department of the KABK in The Hague, she has experience with the photobook in various ways. Her former students include Viviane Sassen and Rob Hornstra, both also known for their successful photobooks.
This is the last masterclass from the Collecting Photography series. The series, which started with a class on printing techniques and the conservation of photographs, followed by sessions on purchasing and framing editions, is open to anyone with an interest in collecting photography.

Masterclass on Photobooks

On 8 November, the exhibition Reflected - Works from the Foam Collection will open at The Atelier N&eacute;erlandais in Paris. 

The exhibition is presented on the occasion of Paris Photo and PhotoSaintGermain. Since 2007 Foam has been collecting photography and its collection has over 550 artworks to date. It is a&nbsp;bold, contemporary collection&nbsp;that focuses on the possibilities of photography and promotes work by young and promising photographers.
Film and photography-related installations, an&nbsp;active and dynamic interest&nbsp;of Foam, are also represented here. The collection is a reflection of the&nbsp;exhibition programme&nbsp;which supports and nurtures the careers of emerging artists working with photography.&nbsp;

Opening Reflected - Works from the Foam Collection

Foam is proud to present Reflected &ndash; Works from the Foam Collection at The Atelier N&eacute;erlandais, Paris, an exhibition of works selected from its own collection.

Foam has been collecting photography actively since 2007, and now comprises around 550 works. Films and photography-related installations are also well represented. The collection is an active and dynamic part of Foam and a reflection of its exhibition programme, in which the emphasis is placed on the support, signalling and presentation of young talents. Foam follows the careers of these young talents, which may also result in further acquisitions. This policy ensures that Foam&rsquo;s collection provides an accurate image of the most recent developments within the expansive field of photography. The works that have been selected for this collection exhibition clearly do justice to this policy.
In an early stage of their career, Foam has acquired photographs by now internationally acclaimed artists such as JH Engstr&ouml;m, Stephen Gill, Pieter Hugo, &nbsp;Alex Prager and Taryn Simon plus of important Dutch photographers such as Blommers &amp; Schumm &nbsp;and Viviane Sassen. Considered second and third purchases provide depth and weight to the collection. Therefore it is an outspoken contemporary collection that pays tribute to the work of young and promising photographers and that clearly focuses on the future, and not, like many other collections, on the past.

In 2014, Foam presented to the public work from its own collection for the first time, in the exhibition&nbsp;Reflected -&nbsp;Works from the Foam Collection. Since then, the collection has grown from over 400 to around 550 works of art. The collection &ndash; which is focused solely on contemporary photography &ndash; is still constantly developing.&nbsp;Loading&hellip; Works from the Foam Collection&nbsp;shows a selection of the most recent additions from the last five years. It features work from 30 international photographers in a diverse exhibition that reflects Foam&rsquo;s exhibition programme.&nbsp;

Foam presents the first solo exhibition by Paul Mpagi Sepuya (born 1982, USA) in Europe. In his exhibition&nbsp;Double Enclosure, Sepuya enters into a dialogue with himself as artist, his subjects and the spectator. He comments on the medium of photography as a construction of longing: the longing to record things, to look, to touch and to keep. Through a combination of draped fabric, careful framing and layered images of existing work, the viewer sees arms, thighs, torsos and hands, but rarely the whole body of the subject. In this way, the spectator is visually challenged to tease apart the construction of the image. With this visual strategy in which he references a homo-erotic visual culture, he explores the productive and critical power of longing as an essential part of his work.

In 2008, the exhibitions Weegee - from the Berinson collection, Kors's Choice, and The Hyena &amp; Other Men from the South African photographer Pieter Hugo receive a lot of attention. The photography festival Foam_fusion, which is organised for the second time, welcomes a great number of visitors, both national and international. Many visitors return to Foam multiple times in the same year due to the ever-changing exhibitions.

The legendary photographer Weegee (b. Usher Fellig, 1899) is regarded as the prototypical modern photojournalist and one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. His photographs have an immediate, almost violent impact. They show crimes and accidents in the New York of the 1930s and 1940s, but also simply life and events on the streets of the city. This is the single most important and most extensive collection of Weegee&rsquo;s work made up exclusively of original vintage prints.<a id="DANIEL &amp; GEO FUCHS"></a>

The exhibition by German artist duo Daniel &amp; Geo Fuchs opens up the hidden rooms once used by the STASI, the infamous East German secret service, in a series of monumental photos. While much of the former DDR infrastructure has been destroyed, or given an entirely new function, the clandestine spaces that Daniel and Geo Fuchs photographed are still in their original condition. The typical Eastern European interiors, with their functional furniture and sober colours seem remarkably styled in retrospect; but most of all, what this large, intriguing project shows is the symbiosis of architecture, power and powerlessness.

Malick Sidib&eacute; (b. 1935) is the &eacute;minence grise of African photography. The centrepiece of the show Chemises is a series of original chemises, coloured sheets of card on which Sidib&eacute; pasted small prints of the photos he took at parties and events in Bamako, the capital of Mali, between 1962 and 1973. Partygoers were able to view and order copies of photos after the event. The chemises are accompanied by numerous portraits taken by Sidib&eacute; in the 1970s at his studio in Bagadadji, a working-class area of Bamako. Together the displays offer a unique and often heartwarming insight into Malinese society in the early years following independence.

In 1956, at the height of the Cold War, Kor van Bennekom began working as a photographer for the communist newspaper De Waarheid. His photos provide a magnificent record of ordinary, hard-working people in a city rebuilding after the war, racked by poverty and unrest. From 1966 onwards Van Bennekom brought street photography into the theatre, portraying Dutch and international actors, musicians, ballet dancers and cabaret artists in a bold and vibrant style. And all the while, Van Bennekom also photographed his family. Kor van Bennekom is a combination of street photographer, theatre photographer and family photographer, whose remarkable oeuvre reflects the history of the Netherlands. This show, featuring many unique photos, is opened by Job Cohen, mayor of Amsterdam.<a id="MIYAKO ISHIUCHI"></a>

Foam presents the first European retrospective of Japanese photographer Miyako Ishiuchi (b. 1947). A central theme in her work is the way time leaves traces on objects and the human body. She finds beauty in places where we typically would not look. The artist brought attention to herself at Biennial 2005 in Venice with her collection Mother&rsquo;s, but the remainder of her work had not yet been presented collectively in Europe. Foam aims to remedy this with an exhibition of over ninety of her works.

Helen Levitt (b. 1913, New York). Inspired by her mentors and friends Walker Evans and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Levitt recorded life on the streets of 1940s New York in black-and-white photos. Her work set the tone for a new documentary style in American photography. &nbsp;In the Street features a series of contact sheets that show how Levitt moved about when photographing on the streets, recording the choreography of the people around her. Helen Levitt was also a pioneer of colour photography. In addition to her black-and-white photos, the exhibition also features a selection of her famous dye-transfers (colour photos).

In March 2008, Hugo was selected by an international jury as winner of the KLM Paul Huf Award 2008. Due to this, his exhibition The Hyena &amp; Other Men is&nbsp;shown in Foam.&nbsp;Pieter Hugo travelled to Nigeria twice (in 2005 and 2007) to follow a legendary group of itinerant street artists known as the Hyena Men. These men earn their money by performing on the streets with hyenas, pythons and baboons, and by selling traditional medicines. In his monumental portraits Hugo manages to capture the complex interaction between the dressers and their animals.&nbsp;<a id="Foam Talent Call"></a>

Ben je een fotografieliefhebber en wil je - ge&iuml;nspireerd door de tentoonstellingen in Foam - met een concrete fotografieopdracht aan de slag? Daag jezelf uit om buiten je eigen kaders te denken en doe mee met onze fotografieworkshop!

THEMA:&nbsp;MODEFOTOGRAFIE
Helmut Newton is als invloedrijke fotograaf een bron van inspiratie voor veel modefotografen gebleken. Hij was nauw bevriend met Yves Saint Laurent en Karl Lagerfeld, modeontwerpers die speelden met man-vrouw verhoudingen en zochten naar een nieuw en eigentijds vrouwbeeld. Dit zien we duidelijk terug in zijn fotografie: de verbeelding van de vrouw en onderliggende thema&rsquo;s als macht, geweld, erotiek en verlangen.&nbsp; In het kader van deze tentoonstelling leer je aan de hand van &eacute;&eacute;n of meerdere overkoepelende thema&rsquo;s verschillende kanten van modefotografie kennen. Ter inspiratie start iedere workshop met een korte rondleiding door de tentoonstelling&nbsp;<a href="/nl/museum/programma/helmut-newton">Helmut Newton &ndash; A Retrospective</a>, met per workshop de nadruk op een ander aspect uit zijn veelzijdige oeuvre.
Het aandachtspunt van de commerci&euml;le modefotografie van Helmut Newton blijft uiteraard de kleding. Om kleding zo goed mogelijk in beeld te brengen zijn de details heel belangrijk. Hoe laat je de stof van een bepaalde jurk vallen zodat het licht en schaduw pakt? Wat voor achtergrond draagt optimaal bij aan hetgeen je wilt overbrengen?
Met nadruk op detail, de setting en focus op de kleding cre&euml;er je foto&rsquo;s die jouw persoonlijke visie laten zien. Laat je naast Helmut Newton ook inspireren door andere modefotografen zoals Viviane Sassen - en trek vooral een kledingstuk of accessoire uit de kast dat op het eerste oog te gewaagd lijkt voor alledaags gebruik.
Het aantal beschikbare plaatsen is beperkt. Meld je dus op tijd aan! Tickets zijn gebonden aan een specifieke datum. Het is na aanschaf helaas niet mogelijk om van datum te wijzigen of om kosteloos te annuleren.

Created by Viviane Sassen in 2006 as a part of the 

 series. Using inkjet print on archival paper as the main medium, the artwork is displayed at 100x80 cm.

In 2021 Foam receives additional support from the Mondriaan Fund and Kickstart Cultuurfonds

Lilac shows a loving entanglement, in which two models appear to merge as one with their intertwined limbs. The photograph is part of the 

 series, which for a large part consists of portraits of young Africans in Zambia, Kenya, and Tanzania. They were often constructed as part of an intuitive collaboration with the subject. Remarkably, it is often impossible to see the subject’s expression: the face and parts of the body tend to be wrapped within a shadow, turning away from the viewer or only display the lower half of the body. This makes it hard to identify with the subject in the photo. The (in)ability to properly register a person’s identity, the limitations preventing the viewer from forming an accurate picture, and the role of photography are recurring themes in Sassen’s work. She plays an intriguing game with perception, undermining our assumptions and stereotypes.
