How does photography relate to the arts of sculpture and painting? These are the types of questions that Dutch artist Fleur van Dodewaard explores in her work. Like her 

 is a contemporary conceptual interpretation of the classic still-life. However minimalistic the work might be, the questions it evokes are highly complex.  

, Van Dodewaard plays with the distinctions between different art disciplines and examines where these boundaries turn blurry. Image 

, showing two red stripes against light-coloured backgrounds, could just as well have been a minimalist painting. The depth contained within the composition is only revealed by the shadow cast by the red block. In this way Van Dodewaard plays with the concept of sculpture, creating a photographic sculpture that lets the viewer see a three-dimensional object through photography’s lens.

Dutch artist Fleur van Dodewaard’s work is all about questioning the way we look at art objects and at the creative process. In her 

, Van Dodewaard offers a unique interpretation of a subject often considered a cliché in the world of photography: the setting sun. 

The yellow reflection in the round mirror serves on the one hand as a minimalist representation of the sun, while it allows the artist to play with the idea of photography as an illusory medium on the other. A mirror always shows something other than itself, namely what it reflects. In this way the artist encourages the viewer to think again about what they really see.

Sunset may well be one of the most photographed moments ever. The changing colours of the sky, from bright orange to gentle hues of purple when the sun has almost slipped behind the horizon, are admired and recorded by countless people around the world, every day again. What do the colours of a sunset arouse in you? 

 presents a new perspective on the cliché image of a sunset within the world of photography. It consists of a series of images in which artist Fleur van Dodewaard repeatedly shows the different colours created by a sunset in the reflection of a circle-shaped mirror. The result is an abstract and minimalist interpretation of a setting sun, as demonstrated by

With Still/Life Foam challenges today's young generation of photographers to produce surprising new interpretations of a classic theme.

When Foam opened in 2001, the very first exhibition was a group show with an art-historical theme, showcasing several Dutch photographers. For its tenth anniversary Foam again presents work by Dutch photographers, this time with a modern take on the classical genre of still lifes.&nbsp;
Over the last decade, Foam has followed Dutch photography from close by and has concluded that the most striking and innovative developments in the medium are found mainly in the world of autonomous photography.&nbsp;As a theme, still life remains as relevant as ever in today's climate. For a wide group of contemporary (autonomous) photographers, still life continues to inspire, although the concept has been modernised and updated.&nbsp;

Still/Life presents various forms of contemporary still life. The show also charts developments relating to photography as a medium and presents an overview of the current climate in autonomous photography. Some have used photography to produce tranquil images, others have used the tranquillity of the subject to demonstrate the flexibility of the medium. With Still/Life Foam challenges today's young generation of photographers to produce surprising new interpretations of a classic theme.

Still/Life: Dutch Contemporary Photography

The year 2011 marks the fifth annual Foam Magazine Talent Issue. For the first time, Foam presents an extensive exhibition with all 15 Foam Talents. 

A selection of work from the Foam Magazine #28 Talent is on show at &amp;Foam (Vijzelstraat 78). This work has been chosen out of 800 portfolios that have been submitted for the yearly Foam Magazine Talent Call.&nbsp;
The fifteen portfolios in <a href="http://shop.foam.org/nl/foam-magazine-foam-magazine-28-talent-2011.html">Foam Magazine Issue #28 Talent</a>&nbsp;span across analogue, black and white, self-development, digital alteration and experimentation that question and confirm the limitations of the photographic medium all at once.&nbsp;

Foam presents a fourth exhibition in China: Still/Life - Contemporary Dutch Photography. This exhibition curated by Foam's artistic director Marcel Feil, will be shown at the Galaxy Art Centre in Chongqing (China) from 24 April until 23 July, 2016. 

The group exhibition Still/Life - Contemporary Dutch Photography is centered on the art historical theme of the still life and comprises works of a large number of emerging and established Dutch visual artists. The autonomous and commercial work of Dutch photographers has a recognizable, fresh style that is also characteristic of so-called Dutch Design. The latter refers to a typically Dutch aesthetic taste that is minimalist, experimental, innovative, unconventional and with a touch of humor. A major aspect is that instead of taking photos as a representation of reality, many of today's photographers take photos entirely staged. Particularly the art historical concept of the still life continues to inspire, albeit in a modernized and updated format. The Potatoes series by Anuschka Blommers and Niels Schumm is a typical example.
