What does this photograph remind you of?

Dutch artist Fleur van Dodewaard’s work is all about questioning the way we look at art objects and at the creative process. In her Sun Set Series, Van Dodewaard offers a unique interpretation of a subject often considered a cliché in the world of photography: the setting sun.

The yellow reflection in the round mirror serves on the one hand as a minimalist representation of the sun, while it allows the artist to play with the idea of photography as an illusory medium on the other. A mirror always shows something other than itself, namely what it reflects. In this way the artist encourages the viewer to think again about what they really see.

Apart from presenting her work in the group exhibitions Foam Talent 2011 and Still/Life, the Sun Set Series was also included in Foam Magazine #28 Talent. In an interview Van Dodewaard describes how this series came to be.
