In the online series Zooming In, we bring together the Foam Talents of 2021. Through a series of online Zoom talks, we aim to learn more about the different projects and how they connect to each other.

This Summer, we dive deeper into Foam Talent 2021 by pairing up the selected artists in an online Zoom conversation. Each of the three events will be divided into two parts. The first part introduces the artists and their projects, focussing on their approach and motivation. After this, we take a closer look at the topics connecting the artists' work, aiming to contextualize their series within the photography field as well as current discourses in society. Each conversation will feature special guests to share their unique perspectives and reflections.

Photographers Delali Ayivi and Solene G&uuml;n reflect on the concept of home, which can be both a shelter and a prison, especially in times of quarantine. Placing the focus on topics such as identity, place, marginalisation and constructions of the self, they question what it means (not) to belong. Both do so from the perspective of their personal family histories of migration.
Special guest Erika Larsson&nbsp;has a postdoc position at Valand Academy&nbsp;in Gothenburg, together with the Hasselblad Foundation, researching contemporary photographers&rsquo; and artist&rsquo;s engagements with the interwar period. She also lectures on photography theory and globalisation in relation to visual culture.

Ismail Ferdous: the Shared Pulse of Image and Sound 

 by Mounir Raji is a heartfelt ode to Amsterdam-West, specifically the Kolenkitbuurt and the Admiralenbuurt, and above all to the people who bring them to life. The exhibition takes place across two locations: Mercatorplein and MAQAM, both in Amsterdam.

Raji spent much time around Mercatorplein and MAQAM, from sidewalks to living rooms and backyards. There, he met people who are often overlooked, yet form the beating heart of the city. Some came from far away, carrying a suitcase full of courage and memories. Here, they rebuilt their lives, each in their own way, in their own language while together shaping a neighbourhood.

In search for a sense of belonging, Rehab Eldalil traced back her family roots to the Bedouin community of South Sinai, Egypt. This confirmed a spiritual connection she long felt towards the region and sent her on a ten-year long collaboration with the locals of St. Catherine, guiding herself through the lands of her ancestors. 

The Longing of the Stranger Whose Path Has Been Broken (

شوق الغريب للي تقطّع سبيله)

 Rehab closely participates with community members during this longstanding encounter, weaving together photographs with sound, video, and local Bedouin traditions of poetry, embroidery and plant medicines in a truly collaborative effort. 

The works emphasise the strong connection of the close-knit Bedouin community to their land, as its protective keeper. At the same time, the project reveals the hardships and constant struggle against displacement, violence, and governmental power, to which the community continues to be subjected. Recent plans for urban developments in the region stress the urgency of the project, becoming a testament of and protest to protect the natural state of the lands and its indigenous keepers.

The artists seamlessly blend traditional photographic techniques with cutting-edge developments, including the much-discussed realm of artificial intelligence, and other mediums such as moving image, embroidery and music.
