WassinkLundgren

Foam presents One Group Show, the first major solo exhibition by the Dutch-born duo WassinkLundgren. This exhibition presents a broad overview of their work, including projects shown for the first time. 

The work of WassinkLundgren develops from small observations or humorous twists of situations from everyday life. Their starting point is always a social interest in the world around them, but equally interesting to them is how the medium of photography can deform reality.
WassinkLundgren playfully subvert some of the unwritten rules of the medium. Like&nbsp;in Tokyo Tokyo, a series of diptychs in which the decisive moment is approached in a lighthearted way. Or Empty Bottles, which catches 24 Chinese people as they scavenge bottles placed by the photographers in various locations. This approach could be called 'conceptual documentary', where repetition, playfulness, investigating the medium of photography and collaboration are all important.

ABOUT WASSINKLUNDGREN WassinkLundgren consists of&nbsp;Thijs groot Wassink (1981) and Ruben Lundgren (1983). Both graduated in 2005 from the photography department of the School of Arts in Utrecht. During the last year of this course they decided to work in collaboration. Subsequently, Thijs groot Wassink completed his Master Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins in London and Ruben Lundgren received his Master in Photography at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. The duo has had several group and solo exhibitions in The Netherlands and abroad. WassinkLundgren first exhibited at Foam in 2007.

LIVE CONCERT: PITOU Performance Start your Sunday morning with a live concert by Pitou, the young and talented singer-songwriter from Amsterdam, supported by two female singers. Her music is characterised by vocal harmonies on the cutting edge of classic, folk and world-music.&nbsp; <a id="walk in"></a> WALK-IN WORKSHOPS Interact Futuristic Portraits, Collage &amp; Podcast making During the Foam Fusion weekend, the refurbished Foam Studios will host&nbsp;an open, collaborative experiment. Starting with a photographic image, over the course of the day the image will be modified and elaborated by different visitors in a variety of media. The result will be&nbsp;a special, joint final product of all visitors at Foam Studios. <a id="zines"></a> 8BALL ZINES WORKSHOP Interact 11.00 | 13.00 | 15.00 During Foam Fusion on Saturday and Sunday between 11.00 &ndash; 17.00 hrs. there are workshops to make Zines in the exhibition&nbsp;Collectivism&nbsp;with 8Ball. With guidance from this New York collective and museum teachers you will work with polaroids, tape, texts and collages to make your personal page. All pages will be bundled and copied into a zine. At the end all participants receive a copy, which is the end result of what you made as a group. <a id="words"></a> PHOTOGRAPHY &amp; WORDS Panel Discussion |&nbsp;12.00 -13.15 Word and image: these are the two main ways we express ourselves. Although the two are sometimes in conflict, a new generation of photographers, writers, publishers and online platforms are creating alternative interactions between text and photography. The auctioned pieces&nbsp;are works&nbsp;that no longer fit into the artists' output&nbsp;as a whole, but still hold a special place in their hearts, thus the title Dead Darlings. Working as an artist duo sparks the imagination. How do such collaborations work? Who comes up with the ideas? Who takes the photo? And who presents the work to the world? These are typical of the questions asked of artist duos, but usually these are not very important matters for the artists themselves. For them collaboration is in most cases an organic process in which authorship is collective. Collaboration is an engine that produces the visual end result. Quite often the actual process of creation can be seen in the resulting work. The lecture doesn't need to be reserved. <a id="gerrit"></a> GERRIT RIETVELD ACADEMIE On display The Department of Photography of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie has a tradition of regularly engaging in interdisciplinary projects. Every year students realise a number of collaborations, both within the academy and outside. The department seeks out partnerships with other academies and institutions, with the intention of learning from each other. Through the establishment of a dialogue and the development of an art project the necessity of collaborative projects for a contemporary artistic practice is emphasized.&nbsp; In this exhibition two recent and ongoing projects are highlighted:&nbsp;Residency: Photography &amp; Psychiatry&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bookmaking: Photography &amp; Graphic Design. <a id="raphael"></a> RAPHAEL DALLAPORTA On display Rapha&euml;l Dallaporta (b. France, 1980) is internationally acclaimed for his long-term collaborative projects with professionals from a wide range of fields. This exhibition presents two of his most recent collaborative projects:&nbsp;Correspondance&nbsp;(2015) and&nbsp;Chauvet-Pont-d&rsquo;Arc&nbsp;(2016). These projects investigate the origin of images: the first original photo and the earliest preserved prehistoric cave paintings, respectively.&nbsp; In the past he has worked closely with a landmine clearer (Antipersonnel), a reporter who covers social work at its intersection with the law (Domestic Slavery), a forensic pathologist (Fragile) and archaeologists (Ruins). He is concerned with public issues addressing human rights as well as more symbolic subjects such as the fragility of life. He usually combines text and images. In 2011 Dallaporta was the winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award and to mark the occasion he presented four of his long-term projects in the exhibition&nbsp;Observation. <a id="patty"></a> PATTY MORGAN INTERNETCAF&Eacute;&nbsp; On display / Interact In collaboration with the online art platform Patty Morgan, Foam presents the 'Patty Morgan Internet Caf&eacute;'. What role can the internet have in the perception of art, and is the internet a place where art is enriched or even deepened? Can art become more personalised and exclusive, or does the internet make it a common good? Within the context of an internet cafe filled with art, you can experience the interface between digital and physical, and explore what art and internet mean today.&nbsp; The artists in the&nbsp;Patty Morgan Internetcaf&eacute; are:&nbsp; Rafa&euml;l Rozendaal, Otto Kaan, Max de Waard, Aukje Dekker &amp; Willehad Eilers, Anouk Kruithof, Olya Oleinic, Cl&eacute;ment Lambelet, Martin Gabriel, Meeus van Dis, Isabel Cavanecia, Tycho Posthumus, Thijs Jaeger &amp; Rik Laging, Sjoerd Martens <a id="foam lab"></a> FOAM LAB:&nbsp;PRINT-&Agrave;-PORTER Interact Foam Lab, Foam's department of young thinkers and creators, has designed an innovative project especially for Collaborate!. Print-&agrave;-Porter stimulates a playful interaction between the festival visitor at Foam and the potential festival visitor outside the museum. To make this interaction possible, two sites come into contact with each other: a photo studio and print shop located at Foam is connected live to a photo studio and print shop on location. In both studios, participants have their portrait photos taken. These photos are then forwarded to the other location and printed on the tote bags. This exchange process will be projected during the festival. <a id="register"></a> REGISTER HERE: ART &amp; INTERACTION On display / Interact&nbsp; In Foam's first exhibition room, you are invited to check in for Foam Fusion. Two artworks register your presence; A third challenges you to act as an intelligent surveillance system does and question our behavior in public space. Art is working together with technology, science, and with you. The artwork of Jonas Lund exists by virtue of the viewer's gaze: his work&nbsp;VIP&nbsp;(Viewer Improved Painting) (2014) lets its compositions decide by tracking your eyes.&nbsp;Matthias Oostrik developed the interactive installation&nbsp;plplpl.pl&nbsp;(2016) in collaboration with technical expert Diederik Schoorl, sound artist Pandelis Diamantides and in partnership with BeamLab. Esther Hovers points out the dark side of the constant surveillance of our daily life with her work&nbsp;False Positives&nbsp;(2015-2016). She developed photomontages through collaborations with various surveillance experts. Does mankind decide how algorithms work, or are algorithms taking over in determining our standards?

SPECIAL GUEST: RICHARD MOSSE Keynote speech | 11.00 - 12.00 In his keynote Richard Mosse talks about his new project Incoming&nbsp;in addition to his former, ground-breaking project The Enclave. In collaboration with composer Ben Frost and cinematographer Trevor Tweeten, the conceptual documentary photographer and filmmaker Richard Mosse created the immersive video installation Incoming. By employing advanced thermal surveillance cameras he visually penetrates the global crisis of human displacement.&nbsp; <a id="walk in"></a> WALK-IN WORKSHOPS Interact Futuristic Portraits, Collage &amp; Podcast making During the Foam Fusion weekend, the refurbished Foam Studios will host&nbsp;an open, collaborative experiment. Starting with a photographic image, over the course of the day the image will be modified and elaborated by different visitors in a variety of media. The result will be&nbsp;a special, joint final product of all visitors at Foam Studios. <a id="zines"></a> 8BALL ZINES WORKSHOP Interact 11.00 | 13.00 | 15.00 During Foam Fusion on Saturday and Sunday between 11.00 &ndash; 17.00 hrs. there are workshops to make Zines in the exhibition Collectivism with 8Ball. With guidance from this New York collective and museum teachers you will work with polaroids, tape, texts and collages to make your personal page. All pages will be bundled and copied into a zine. At the end all participants receive a copy, which is the end result of what you made as a group. <a id="social agency"></a>&nbsp; SOCIAL AGENCY Panel Discussion | 12.30 - 13.45 The medium of photography has long been a&nbsp;catalyst of social change and an instrument for activism. In contrast with the more traditional documentary photography genre, in which the photographer tends to position himself as an &lsquo;objective&rsquo; observer, photographers and artists who consciously give a voice to underrepresented or stereotyped communities and minorities through collaboration and exchange with their subjects, have stood out. We will go into a conversation with photographers who in their socially engaged, sometimes activist artistic practices, aim to make visual information freely accessible and independent from the restrictions of conventional news publishing channels or who aim to break through historically rooted views and stereotypes by giving their subjects a sense of control over the image that the artist is creating of them. Central to the discussion is how these artists use images in their practice. Introduction and moderator: Kim Knoppers Round table: Lele Saveri (US), Werker (NL) and Jessica Gysel (NL) <a id="gerrit"></a> GERRIT RIETVELD ACADEMIE On display The Department of Photography of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie has a tradition of regularly engaging in interdisciplinary projects. Every year students realise a number of collaborations, both within the academy and outside. The department seeks out partnerships with other academies and institutions, with the intention of learning from each other. Through the establishment of a dialogue and the development of an art project the necessity of collaborative projects for a contemporary artistic practice is emphasized.&nbsp; In this exhibition two recent and ongoing projects are highlighted:&nbsp;Residency: Photography &amp; Psychiatry&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bookmaking: Photography &amp; Graphic Design. <a id="raphael"></a> RAPHAEL DALLAPORTA On display &amp; Artist talk Rapha&euml;l Dallaporta (b. France, 1980) is internationally acclaimed for his long-term collaborative projects with professionals from a wide range of fields. This exhibition presents two of his most recent collaborative projects:&nbsp;Correspondance&nbsp;(2015) and&nbsp;Chauvet-Pont-d&rsquo;Arc&nbsp;(2016). These projects investigate the origin of images: the first original photo and the earliest preserved prehistoric cave paintings, respectively.&nbsp; In the past he has worked closely with a landmine clearer (Antipersonnel), a reporter who covers social work at its intersection with the law (Domestic Slavery), a forensic pathologist (Fragile) and archaeologists (Ruins). He is concerned with public issues addressing human rights as well as more symbolic subjects such as the fragility of life. He usually combines text and images. In 2011 Dallaporta was the winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award and to mark the occasion he presented four of his long-term projects in the exhibition&nbsp;Observation. <a id="patty"></a> PATTY MORGAN INTERNETCAF&Eacute;&nbsp; On display / Interact In collaboration with the online art platform Patty Morgan, Foam presents the 'Patty Morgan Internet Caf&eacute;'. What role can the internet have in the perception of art, and is the internet a place where art is enriched or even deepened? Can art become more personalised and exclusive, or does the internet make it a common good? Within the context of an internet cafe filled with art, you can experience the interface between digital and physical, and explore what art and internet mean today.&nbsp; The artists in the&nbsp;Patty Morgan Internetcaf&eacute; are:&nbsp; Rafa&euml;l Rozendaal, Otto Kaan, Max de Waard, Aukje Dekker &amp; Willehad Eilers, Anouk Kruithof, Olya Oleinic, Cl&eacute;ment Lambelet, Martin Gabriel, Meeus van Dis, Isabel Cavanecia, Tycho Posthumus, Thijs Jaeger &amp; Rik Laging, Sjoerd Martens <a id="foam lab"></a> FOAM LAB:&nbsp;PRINT-&Agrave;-PORTER Interact Foam Lab, Foam's department of young thinkers and creators, has designed an innovative project especially for Collaborate!. Print-&agrave;-Porter stimulates a playful interaction between the festival visitor at Foam and the potential festival visitor outside the museum. To make this interaction possible, two sites come into contact with each other: a photo studio and print shop located at Foam is connected live to a photo studio and print shop on location. In both studios, participants have their portrait photos taken. These photos are then forwarded to the other location and printed on the tote bags. This exchange process will be projected during the festival. <a id="register"></a> REGISTER HERE: ART &amp; INTERACTION On display / Interact&nbsp; In Foam's first exhibition room, you are invited to check in for Foam Fusion. Two artworks register your presence; A third challenges you to act as an intelligent surveillance system does and question our behavior in public space. Art is working together with technology, science, and with you. The artwork of Jonas Lund exists by virtue of the viewer's gaze: his work&nbsp;VIP&nbsp;(Viewer Improved Painting) (2014) lets its compositions decide by tracking your eyes.&nbsp;Matthias Oostrik developed the interactive installation&nbsp;plplpl.pl&nbsp;(2016) in collaboration with technical expert Diederik Schoorl, sound artist Pandelis Diamantides and in partnership with BeamLab. Esther Hovers points out the dark side of the constant surveillance of our daily life with her work&nbsp;False Positives&nbsp;(2015-2016). She developed photomontages through collaborations with various surveillance experts. Does mankind decide how algorithms work, or are algorithms taking over in determining our standards? <a id="collection"></a> DUAL VISION: ARTIST DUOS FROM THE FOAM COLLECTION On display This presentation for Foam Fusion shows a selection of work from the Foam collection made by artist duos. Working as an artist duo sparks the imagination. How do such collaborations work? Who comes up with the ideas? Who takes the photo? And who presents the work to the world? These are typical of the questions asked of artist duos, but usually these are not very important matters for the artists themselves. For them collaboration is in most cases an organic process in which authorship is collective. Collaboration is an engine that produces the visual end result. Quite often the actual process of creation can be seen in the resulting work. <a id="strike"></a>STRIKE A POSE Performance | 18.30 | 19.30&nbsp; How is it possible to create a performance from a photo and how can you inspire yourself through a snapshot? What happens the moment after taking a photo and how can you translate this into dance? These questions are investigated by 12 MBO students working in duos of photographers and dancers. The day begins with an introductory game, designed and performed by a student of Cultural Enterprises, ROCvA Zuid. The workshop is accompanied by a professional photographer in collaboration with a dancer and choreographer from Lucia Marthas. Foam Fusion: Day 1

The year 2007 sees a broad range of themes in Foam: from classical twentieth-century French and German photographers to young American dreamers. The focus on young talent, which had been a focal point since Foam's inception, begins to take a solid shape in the form of the very first Foam Magazine Talent Issue and the first Foam Paul Huf Award.

German photographer August Sander (1876-1964) proposed to chart the entire structure of society of his day. The result was a sociological project, a historical document and a photographic masterpiece. Sander arranged this highly ambitious project into seven principal categories: The Farmer, The Skilled Tradesman, The Woman, Classes and Professions, The Artists, The City and The Last People. Although August Sander&rsquo;s ideas about social order are no longer appropriate, his work has remained influential and significant for later photographers. Foam selected around 80 vintage prints from People of the 20th Century providing a representative reflection of August Sander&rsquo;s perspective.

American photographer James Nachtwey (b. 1948, New York) is one of the most influential photojournalists of our day. He photographed in crisis situations around the world for over 20 twenty years, including Rwanda, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Somalia, the Middle East and Iraq. Nachtwey sees himself as an anti-war photographer: a photographer who in addition to documenting situations, also bears witness and gives victims a voice. He shows us the circumstances in which people exist, while documenting their situation with the utmost respect.<a id="Lise Sarfati"></a>

In 2003, Sarfati journeyed through the United States, photographing young adults. With minimal directions Sarfati finds connections with her subjects in their everyday spaces and situations&ndash; bedrooms, backyards, kitchens, grocery stores.&nbsp; Lise Sarfati dramatizes the complexity of adolescent identity; within unfamiliar territory &ndash; both emotionally and physically &ndash; where the simplest of feelings become exalted and everything is lived with an intensity that adults will never again be able to feel. In the exhibition, a selection of colour photographs from recent work is accompanied by a slide show of 70 images with a musical soundtrack by British electronic duo Death in Vegas.&nbsp;<a id="Jacques Henri Lartigue"></a>

Foam presents work by the best-known amateur photographer of the 20th century: the Frenchman Jacques Henri Lartigue (1894-1986). Born into a prosperous middle-class family in Paris, Lartigue focused his camera on the carefree existence in and around his own family circle. Lartigue is famous for his spectacular photos of car races, aeroplanes and people and animals in motion. He could capture fleeting moments of happiness like no other. Lartigue&rsquo;s oeuvre offers a light and cheerful perspective on life in France in the early 20th century.<a id="Mitch Epstein"></a>

Over the last thirty years American photographer Mitch Epstein has emerged as one of America&rsquo;s leading contemporary photographers. Foam shows two of his series. In American Power Epstein probes the use and abuse of energy in the United States. The images focus, often by implication, on the use of fossil fuels, as well as wind, water and nuclear power. Family Business too concentrates on essential themes of American society, but through the prism of a personal narrative: the collapse of Epstein&rsquo;s father&rsquo;s furniture company and real estate holdings.<a id="Inside Out"></a>

The city of Amsterdam contains a treasure of high quality photography. Much of this photographic wealth can be found in collections and archives, such as the Stedelijk Museum, Rijksmuseum, Stadsarchief and Maria Austria Instituut. Foam has compiled an exhibition showing work from the holdings of all four of these institutions, with an emphasis on work made since 1945 by Amsterdam natives. As a whole the photographs illustrate the richness and diversity of Amsterdam photography.<a id="Ryan McGinley"></a>

Ryan McGinley has been hailed as one of today&rsquo;s most promising photographers. Following exhibitions in New York and Paris, his work can be seen in the Netherlands for the first time at Foam. For Celebrating Life McGinley photographed a group of friends on a road trip across America. In this series he celebrates freedom and escape from the daily grind against the backdrop of the magnificent American landscape. At&nbsp;the very first iteration of the Foam Paul Huf award, two winners were crowned: Mikhael Subotzky and Taryn Simon shared the prize. The first, Mikhael Subotzky,&nbsp;is the youngest photographer ever to be accepted into Magnum Photos (at age 25). His exhibition Beaufort West was shown in Foam from&nbsp;21 September to 11 November 2007. The second, Taryn Simon (b. 1975), got her own exhibition in Foam in&nbsp;<a href="/museum/programme/2008-year-in-review#Other exhibitions">2008</a>.&nbsp;<a id="Foam Talent Call"></a>

2007: Year in Review

Foam presents a selection of photographs from the collection at OBA, the Amsterdam Public Library.

From 2&nbsp;September until 30 November 2016, Foam presents the exhibition Reading Images in OBA as a part of educational project&nbsp;<a href="/nl/over-ons/samenwerkingsprojecten/amsterdam-vertelt" target="_blank">Amsterdam Vertelt.</a>
The meaning of a photo is often not as clear as it seems. We can read the image, but do we know how to read a visual image? What is a picture, an image anyway? Does it tell us all the same story, or do we look at it from different points of view?
The photographer has chosen a specific framework, a particular composition, a particular exposure. The final image is a snapshot, and thus explains only a fraction of the story. What happened before this shot? And what will happen one second later? What is the effect of the image on us, as an audience?

ABOUT THE FOAM COLLECTION Foam exhibits photographs of young talents and follows them through the course of their careers. Foam's collection is therefore representative of photography of the 21st century in which relevant developments in contemporary photography are visible. The collection now has more than 500 works and reflects the complexity of contemporary photography; many of the works sit on the boundary of the medium and show interactions with video art and sculpture.

Don't miss the opportunity to join a guided tour by the curators of Foam&rsquo;s latest exhibition Francesca Woodman. On Being An Angel: Anna Tellgren, curator at Moderna Museet and Kim Knoppers (Foam). 

The exhibition gives an overview of the exceptional oeuvre of American photographer Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) who died at a young age. ABOUT FRANCESCA WOODMAN. ON BEING AN ANGEL Before committing suicide at the age of twenty-two, Woodman explored themes such as gender, representation, sexuality and corporality. She used photography as an extremely personal means of expression, as if wearing her skin inside out. Woodman&rsquo;s photographs showcase a range of symbolist and surrealist influences, and in many cases they evoke oppressive feelings. Francesca Woodman&rsquo;s photographs were shown in a number of major international exhibitions and they have inspired artists all over the world. &gt;&gt; <a href="/museum/programme/francesca-woodman">Read more</a> ABOUT ANNA TELLGREN Anna Tellgren (1964) is curator of the exhibition Francesca Woodman: On Being an Angel (2015) at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, where she has been curator of photography since 2004. She promoted and was researcher and lecturer at the Department of Art History at Stockholm University. Tellgren is a committee member of the &lsquo;Nordic Network for the History and Aesthetics of Photography&rsquo; and is the Associate Editor of Konsthistorisk tidskrift/Journal of Art History. She previously curated the Arbus, Model, Str&ouml;mholm exhibition and was the editor of the catalogue with the same title, published in 2005 by Steidl. ABOUT KIM KNOPPERS Kim Knoppers (1976) has been a curator at Foam Museum since 2011. She studied art history at the University of Amsterdam. She was previously curator at De Beyerd Center of Contemporary Art and has also worked as a freelance curator. She has curated group exhibitions including Remind (2003), Exotics (2008), Snow is White (2010, together with Joris Jansen) and Re-Search (2012), and solo exhibitions by WassinkLundgren, Onorato &amp; Krebs, Jan Hoek, Lorenzo Vitturi, Jan Rosseel, JH Engstr&ouml;m, Geert Goiris, Broomberg &amp; Chanarin, Anne de Vries and Paul Bogaers amongst others. The exhibition Francesca Woodman. On Being an Angel has been organized by the Moderna Museet in Stockholm in collaboration with the Estate of Francesca Woodman.
