In the neighbourhood

Discover your neighbourhood with a camera. With the help of a Foam museum teacher, students go out into the neighbourhood around and take a special photo of their favourite place.

About the workshop

Before going outside, students learn how to make a good photo by taking a good look at photos of professional photographers. Later, they will use this knowledge in groups. It will be their mission to take a photo of a place the group thinks is special. When they get back to the classroom, the students will take a look at the results and will explain where the photo was taken and why they thought taking this particular photo was worth it. Furthermore, they will tell why this photo was made the way it did. Because of this, students will discover that the neighbourhood is seen differently by others.

Learning goals

  • Consciously looking at photography
  • Learning to look at your surroundings in a different way
  • Gain knowledge about photography terminology and picture elements
  • Practice working together with other classmates
  • Learn to reflect on your own work and that of others

Series or lessons

Do you want more time to learn about photography in the neighbourhood or around your school? This workshop can be extended to a series of 3 or 4 lessons. In these lessons, there is more time to dive deeper into the principles of photography and taking photos. Please feel free to contact the Education department to discuss the possibilities. We are happy to think along with you about an appropriate implementation of the program.
