Juno Calypso is a British photographer from Hackney, London. Her work consists of highly stylised self-portraits as her fictional alter-ego 'Joyce'. Through these cinematic and uncanny images, Calypso addresses topics like loneliness, and femininity.
In 2012, Calypso received a BA in Photography from the London College of Communication. Calypso’s photography has featured in group shows internationally, such as Foam Talent New York and London, and has appeared in a range of publications including VICE, The Guardian, The Financial Times and Dazed & Confused. Her work The Honeymoon was selected by the British Journal of Photography as the winner of its International Photography Award.
Foam Talent 2016
In 2016, Juno Calypso was one of the 24 selected artists for Foam Talent, the annual open call for young photographic talent.
For The Honeymoon, Juno Calypso spent exactly one week in an American couple hotel with a suitcase full of wigs and lingerie. In this supposedly romantic setting, she carefully staged a variety of self-portraits, performing as her fictional alter-ego 'Joyce'. Acting out boredom, loneliness and female sexuality, Calypso critically reflects on the rituals surrounding beauty, seduction and the female gender.
