Op welke verschillende manieren kan je een fotografisch beeld maken? Van het complexe chemische proces in de vroege jaren van het medium tot de geavanceerde technologie die aan de basis ligt van digitale camera’s: naast een kunstvorm kan fotografie gezien worden als een wetenschap in voortdurende ontwikkeling. Het kunstenaarsduo, Jaya Pelupessy en Felix van Dam, werd geïntrigeerd door het idee dat een zeefdruk in principe ook lichtgevoelig is en dus als fotonegatief kan worden gebruikt. Ondanks dat het idee werd bestempeld als ‘onmogelijk’, was het duo vastberaden om hun eigen unieke ‘zeefdruk’ camera te maken. Uiteindelijk lukte het door een lichtgevoelige emulsie aan te brengen op een zeefdruk en deze voor twee uur bloot te stellen aan direct zonlicht. Je vraagt je misschien af wat dit verhaal precies te maken heeft met de witte sculptuur met zonnebril. In de hoop de belichtingstijd te verlagen besloot het duo om te experimenteren met uv-licht. Door de hoeveelheid uv-licht die nodig was, moesten Pelupessy en Van Dam uiteindelijk een zonnebril dragen om hun ogen te beschermen tegen het felle licht.

Amsterdam 750: Mounir Raji Captures the People Who Shape the City

In de kerstvakantie kunnen kinderen hun fantasie de vrije loop laten tijdens een speciale workshop bij Foam! Blommers & Schumm hebben een eigen beeldtaal ontwikkeld. Hun werk nodigt je uit om opnieuw te kijken naar wat je ziet en hoe je het ziet. Geïnspireerd door de tentoonstelling en de werkwijze van het kunstenaarsduo, ontdekken kinderen hoe alledaagse voorwerpen gebruikt kunnen worden om verrassende kunstwerken te maken.

Door goed te kijken, te verschuiven en te combineren, leren ze hoe eenvoudige dingen samen een compleet nieuw beeld kunnen vormen: een gezicht, een bloem, of misschien wel iets totaal onverwachts. Met illusie en verbeelding maken de kinderen hun eigen kunstwerk, dat laat zien hoe verschillend je naar de wereld om je heen kunt kijken.

Deze workshop is bedoeld voor kinderen van 6 tot 12 jaar. Ouders en verzorgers kunnen gratis deelnemen.

On Our Radar: A Parliament of Empty Gestures by Mark Duffy

 van Mounir Raji is een ode aan Amsterdam-West, specifiek de Kolenkitbuurt en de Admiralenbuurt, en vooral aan de mensen die deze buurten tot leven brengen. De tentoonstelling vindt plaats op twee locaties: Mercatorplein en MAQAM, beide in Amsterdam.

Raji bracht veel tijd door rondom Mercatorplein en MAQAM, van stoepen tot woonkamers en achtertuinen. Daar ontmoette hij mensen die vaak over het hoofd worden gezien, maar het kloppende hart van de stad vormen. Sommigen kwamen van ver, met een koffer vol moed en herinneringen. Hier bouwden ze hun leven opnieuw, ieder op hun eigen manier, in hun eigen taal, terwijl ze samen een buurt vormgaven.

, Sheung Yiu looks into different practices of face reading, facial prediction and facial recognition. For this multi-medial series, consisting of a video essay, a series of self-portraits and an extensive research notebook of visual references, he submitted his own face as a test case: scanning, screening and analysing his features in order to understand the processes behind it. 

In his practice, Sheung Yiu combines East-Asian traditions of facial readings, promising to predict one's future based on facial features, with contemporary facial recognition technologies, drawing a striking parallel between Eastern and Western practices around facial studies.  

On a deeper level, the project questions the way different technologies, whether digital or analogue, algorithmic or esoteric, shape the perceptions and biases connected to our faces. Through this, he recognises that a face is never just a face: it is what we, or the systems we use, want to read into it.

What is the relationship between the photographer and the one that is photographed? In an attempt to answer this question, Amin Yousefi turned to photobooks, documenting the Iranian Revolution of 1978-1979 in his home-country. Zooming in on archival images of large demonstrations, he looked for protestors who locked eyes with the camera. 

Anonymous faces stare into the photographer’s lens, clearly showing awareness of being captured, inviting the viewer to look. Interestingly, the photographer at the time was most likely 

 aware of the returning gazes—due to the size of the crowds and the limitations of a 35mm camera viewfinder. In this case, Yousefi argues, it seems that the photographed is in control of the image, rather than the photographer, as one might assume. 

With the help of a magnifying glass, he rephotographed each of them—connecting himself with these individuals across time and space and isolating them into a newly formed crowd. Consisting of fifty portraits, 

Eyes Dazzle as they Search for the Truth 

examines how our knowledge about the past is formed through archival images. By turning his camera to those who looked back, Yousefi tries to understand the impact of one of the most influential events in Iranian contemporary history.

In an attempt to minimize the devastating effect of global warming on the glaciers of the Swiss Alps, each summer they are covered with geotextile blankets that are designed to keep the ice cool. Douglas Mandry journeyed his native country, intrigued by this desperate attempt to prevent the receding glaciers from further melting. The artist collected disused pieces of geotextile from the mountains, and later processed them as a base for found photographs of early twentieth-century alpinism in the region. Mandry also took bits of broken ice from the glacier with him in a cool box. In the darkroom, he put the ice in the enlarger, where it started to melt and drip onto the photo paper, creating a colourful aura of the glacier. Mandry then reproduced these photograms on glass plates. 

could be considered an index of the vanishing glaciers of Switzerland: frozen time, captured in an instant by the principles of photography.

Gemaakt door Simon Wald-Lasowski in 2010. Het kunstwerk is een c-print met een afmeting van 92 x 65 cm.

De Amerikaanse rapper Victor Vazquez maakte deel uit van de hiphop-groep 

. Deze groep stond bekend om hun in grappen verwerkte politieke en maatschappelijke boodschappen. Maar hoe portreteer je een rapper die bekend staat om zijn gelaagde humoristische teksten? Precies zoals je zou verwachten: met een knipoog. Het portret van Simon Wald-Lasowski toont Vazquez die een croissant voor zijn mond houdt. Door de croissant om te draaien lijkt het op een verdrietige smiley, wat de rapper ook nog eens accentueert door te doen alsof hij met zijn vinger een traan wegveegt vanachter zijn bril. 

Het werk van Simon Wald-Lasowski was te zien tijdens 

, een tentoonstelling in samenwerking met het Amsterdamse muziektijdschrift Subbacultcha. 

 was de tweede tentoonstelling in een reeks waarin Foam aandacht besteedde aan de overlap tussen fotografie en andere artistieke media.

Gemaakt door Léonie Hampton in 2009. Het kunstwerk is een fotogezicht op 6 mm dik ijzeren glas, gepolijste en afgeschuinde randen, polyester achterkant en MDF-splitlat met een afmeting van 17 x 25,40 cm.

Welke sfeer creëert deze foto? Geeft het je een spannend, mysterieus of misschien onheilspellend gevoel? De enigszins versleten en achtergelaten kinderschoenen spreken tot de verbeelding, maar ook de locatie en het licht dragen hier sterk aan bij. De met mos bedekte tegels, de verdorde bladeren die zich hebben verzameld in de schoenen en het gebrek aan licht suggereren dat de schoentjes al een tijd geleden zijn achtergelaten in de tuin. Fotograaf Léonie Hampton speelt bewust met de interactie tussen het onderwerp, de locatie en het licht, om zo de sfeer van de foto te versterken.

, dat een beeld geeft van het dagelijkse gezinsleven met een moeder die aan een obsessieve-compulsieve stoornis (OCS) lijdt.

Leven met een continue angst voor vuil en besmetting. Stapels spullen die kamers onbruikbaar maken. Jezelf isoleren van de rest van de wereld. Obsessieve-compulsieve stoornissen (OCS) gaan gepaard met dwanggedachten en -handelingen die regelmatig botsen met de sociale activiteiten en relaties van betrokkenen. 

 is het resultaat van een afspraak tussen moeder en dochter. De Engelse fotograaf Léonie Hampton belooft haar moeder te helpen in haar gevecht tegen de dwangstoornis, mits zij haar dagelijks leven met OCS mag vastleggen. 

 toont een geel jasje dat met kledinghanger en al naar buiten geslingerd lijkt te zijn, en dat ondertussen al ondergesneeuwd is met verdorde herfstbladeren. De titel en het beeld suggereren een zekere tegenstrijdigheid. Het verwijderen van motten uit het jasje, uit angst voor besmetting, staat haaks op het vuil dat op het jasje terechtkomt nu het buiten ligt.

Welke emoties roept dit beeld bij jou op? Geeft de nachtelijke scène van een huis midden in het bos een onheilspellend gevoel over wat er nog komen gaat? Of voert het warme licht achter de ramen je juist mee naar een knusse woonkamer tijdens een koude winteravond? 

, waarin de Engelse fotograaf Léonie Hampton de kijker meeneemt in het dagelijkse leven van haar familie. De serie ontstond toen Hampton haarmoeder, die lijdt aan een obsessieve-compulsieve stoornis (OCS), aanbood te helpen opruimen, mits ze het proces mocht fotograferen. Het resultaat geeft een intiem en persoonlijk beeld van de complexe verhoudingen die in een familie kunnen bestaan, die niet altijd zichtbaar zijn voor de buitenwereld. 

 gaat in op de mythe van het perfecte gezin en toont de onbreekbare band en liefde binnen een familie.

Gemaakt door Clément Lambelet in 2016. De kunstwerken zijn houten lichtbakken (wit) met plexiglas en duratrans, beide tentoongesteld op 200 x 105 cm.

Ontwikkelingen in beeldherkenningssystemen leiden tot steeds meer geautomatiseerde vormen van bewaking en persoonsidentificatie, maar hoe betrouwbaar zijn deze nieuwe systemen? Clément Lambelet zoekt naar de mazen in dit snel ontwikkelende ‘algoritmische ecosysteem’. Het middelpunt van de serie 

 is een variatie op een gravure van de Bijbelse figuren Adam en Eva uit 1504 gemaakt door de Duitse Renaissance-kunstenaar Albrecht Dürer. Dürer was ervan overtuigd dat de ideale verhoudingen van het menselijk lichaam met mathematische formules konden worden benaderd. Voor zijn interpretatie gebruikte Lambelet een bodyscanner, zoals ook gebruikt wordt op vliegvelden. Met zijn werk bevraagt Lambelet het tot cijfers reduceren van het menselijk lichaam door aan te tonen dat algoritmes functioneel bevooroordeeld kunnen zijn.

Primair Onderwijs - Workshop - A.I.dentity

In a four-part series led by acclaimed Polaroid artists Rhiannon Adams, Ellen Carey & John Reuter, and Marcel Veldman and Foam 3h alumnus Ece Gökalp, the participating students were able to use the recently launched Polaroid I-2 camera – the first advanced instant camera with built-in manual controls. Moreover, they had the chance to discuss their perspectives about the possibilities of storytelling and the enduring relevancy of this unique medium.

Students as well as young, self-made creatives approached the medium from various angles and shed light on its artistic, social, and technological significance by pushing the boundaries of what instant film can achieve. The results of their collective efforts are now on display as part of an exclusive online exhibition.
