Foam is one of the eight participating museums in this year's Museumstraat, taking place in the Kolenkitbuurt neighbourhood in Amsterdam West. During Museumstraat these mini exhibitions are open to visitors for the entire day.
The host and museum prepare a mini-exhibition based on the host’s personal story told through objects from the museum collection. Museumstraat also organizes workshops and cultural activities around the event.
LOOKING AND BEING WATCHED
This year, Foam's Museumstraat host is Kolenkit resident Maartje Knaap, a film student who has lived in multiple temporary residences throughout the neighbourhood. She noticed that every time she moved and the building was demolished, surveillance cameras were immediately added to the building site where she had been living not long before. The pieces she chose from Foam's collection (three works by Tudor Bratu and Yeb Wiersma) are themed around this peculiar sense of looking and being watched.
During the Museumstraat exhibition Maartje will be museum director for a day, giving guests a tour of her collection and leading the discussion and a small workshop around the artworks.
Foam is also hosting a walk-in workshop on another location, themed around the current exhibition about Helmut Newton that is on view in the museum. This happens in a seperate location, neigbourhood centre B.A.C.K.

ABOUT THE MUSEUMSTRAAT
Museumstraat is an annual occasion for Amsterdam museums to show pieces from their collections in private homes. The two previous Amsterdam editions were held in the Indische Buurt and the Transvaalbuurt. This year’s edition takes place in Kolenkitbuurt and includes pieces from the collections of ARCAM, de Appel, de Hortus, EYE, Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, Multatuli Huis, NEMO Science Museum and Van Eesterenmuseum.
Museumstraat Kolenkitbuurt is organized by four graduate students from the Reinwardt Academy. Museumstraat foundation brings museums to the people and combines stories about objects with the life stories of residents. Three successful editions have taken place in Rotterdam and two in Amsterdam.
