Foam x Echobox present: The sounds of In Her Own Way
On 21 and 22 October, Foam and Echobox present a two-day programme that builds on the collaboration between Foam and Middle East Archive. Bringing together photography, music and conversation, the programme connects Yomna El Beyaly’s exhibition on Mercatorplein with the sounds and perspectives of the MENA region.
Join us across Podium Mozaïek and Mercatorplein in Amsterdam West for two days of exchange, listening and new perspectives. Everyone is welcome at these ADE events.
Wednesday 21 October — Podium Mozaïek
Podium Mozaïek hosts a workshop by EIN L AQL exploring Arabic music through listening and improvisation. Participants will listen to pioneering female artists from the MENA region and explore these sounds together through music and play.
The workshop is followed by a lecture by photographer Yomna El Beyaly and a panel discussion with Karmel and Noise Diva, moderated by Sarah Saleh, exploring questions of identity, representation, archiving and self-representation. The day concludes with an open jam led by EIN L AQL, bringing participants and visitors together through collective improvisation.
Thursday 22 October — Mercatorplein
On Thursday 22 October, the programme moves to Mercatorplein, where Yomna El Beyaly’s outdoor exhibition is on view. Together with Echobox, Foam takes over an unexpected yet meaningful venue for one evening: Aladdin’s Notenhoek, a beloved local business that has long been part of everyday life on the square.
Here, DJs Karmel, Noise Diva, and ZINEB present a music programme where sound, memory and storytelling come together. Through their selections, they share personal experiences, cultural references and sources of inspiration, creating connections with themes explored in El Beyaly’s work, including identity, femininity, community, and the ways women represent themselves and one another.
