Foam Talk | The stories behind the images

In conjunction with the exhibition Foam Talent, on view in New York from 22 March until 10 April, Foam is organising an afternoon of talks at Red Hook Labs on Saturday 23 March.

Each year, Foam Talent Call attracts over 1800 artistic projects. After reviewing all the tremendously diverse portfolios, the editors manage to select 20 entries that contain the most striking images. When examined closer, recurring themes begin to emerge amongst the bodies of work. Join us on a journey inside the minds of the artists as they reveal the stories behind the images and how they relate to identity, the photographic process and the world around us.

Programme

  1. THE PASSAGE OF TIME
Theme based on the works of Thomas Hauser, Stelios Kallinikou, Florian Amoser, Daniel Shea, Chen Zhe and Salvatore Vitale.
On how physical, political and mental structures of our communal home, planet earth, make for an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

    > Introduction by Elisa Medde
    > Interview with Thomas Hauser

  2. STRATEGIES OF INVESTIGATING THE MEDIUM
Theme based on the works of Sophie Gabrielle, Gregory Eddi Jones, Jaya Pelupessy and Lilly Lulay.
How can we deconstruct the photographic process in order to reflect on that which is constructed?

    > Panel conversation with Jaya Pelupessy, Lilly Lulay and Gregory Eddi Jones

  3. REASSESSING IDENTITIES
Theme based on the works of Durimel, Maisie Cousins, Sylvain Couzinet-Jacques, Dima Komarov, Senta Simond, Carmen Winant and Eric Gyamfi.
By focusing on individuals and sub-groups, how can we rewrite future narratives around identity?

    > Artist Talk by Sylvain Couzinet-Jacques
    > Interview with Durimel

Admission to the event is free and you can RSVP here.

The panel discussions will be followed by the inaugural Labs Slide Slam, a presentation of work received via an open call for young photographers without agency and gallery representation. This is an opportunity for artists to have their work seen by an international community of editors and curators.
