Book presentation:
Riding in Silence & The Crying Dervish by Mashid Mohadjerin
Join us on Thursday 25 September in Foam Editions for the book presentation of ‘Riding in Silence & The Crying Dervish’, the most recent book of award-winning visual artist and lecturer Mashid Mohadjerin. During this festive evening in Foam’s gallery, Mohadjerin will talk with independent curator Daria Tuminas about the series featured in the publication and the creative process of making this artist book.
About the publication
An intricate tapestry of personal and collective memory, Mashid Mohadjerin’s work interweaves photography, text, video, and archival material to explore displacement, resistance, and identity. She reconstructs the past not as a distant realm but as something tangible, living within language, inherited trauma, and memory.
In ‘Riding in Silence & The Crying Dervish’, the tension between imposed identity and self-definition is key to the artist’s exploration of masculinity and how it is shaped by war, colonialism, nationalism, and religious ideology.
Through the lens of her father’s memories, Mohadjerin reveals how even the simplest actions become acts of quiet defiance.
Mashid Mohadjerin is currently based in Belgium. She obtained her PhD in the Arts in 2021 from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and earlier this year she had a solo exhibition in FOMU, Antwerp.
