I saw a tree bearing stones in the place of apples and pears

Join us on Thursday, 20 February for the presentation of Emilia Martin's latest book I saw a tree bearing stones in the place of apples and pears. Martin will present her publication during this festive evening at Foam's in-house gallery and Inge Loes ten Kate, professor of astrobiology and planetary sciences, will share insights on meteorites, space, rocks, and more. We will also present a special edition print, which will be for sale exclusively via Foam in an edition of 25.

About the publication

Emilia Martin (PL/NL) is an artist passionate about storytelling and myths, primarily working with media of photography, sound and writing. In 2024 she published her first photobook I saw a tree bearing stones in the place of apples and pears. It explores the rock as a carrier of stories: a migratory body, a silent visitor filled with human projections and dreams, transcending class and social constructs.

The book questions who has been allowed to claim truths and who has been relegated to the realm of tales. It is a story of how some truths can only live subversively, woven into myths and tales. It is a fantasy in which a rock, long seen as mute and voiceless, reclaims its voice to tell thousands of stories, grounding its place within history and imagination, where science and tales speak a common language.
