Afrovism: The Garden of Frequencies
Join us on Thursday, 28 August, for a special edition of Afrovism inspired by the exhibition Yere Mi Sten by Augusta Curiel. This evening of deep listening brings together sound, image, and archive, inviting you not only to see Suriname but also to hear it.
The programme begins with a live performance by Phantom Wizard, followed by a lecture around the work led by UMA SOCIETY and a sonic journey together with Dwight Neville.
Throughout the evening, we invite you to explore vinyl listening stations featuring curated Surinamese music that offer new ways to engage with Curiel’s photographic legacy through rhythm, memory, and atmosphere.
About the event
The evening will open with a performance by Phantom Wizard, a composer and multidisciplinary artist known for dissolving boundaries and reimagining tradition through sound.
We’ll continue with a lecture by UMA Society, a movement that focuses on empowering women and amplifying their stories, particularly in the creative and cultural fields.
Followed by a sonic journey with Dwight Neville, where a curated playlist featuring traditional Surinamese genres such as Kawina, Kaseko, and Winti music plays on vinyl LPs.
