The bed appears to be a popular setting in which to photograph musicians. Remember for example John Lennon’s famous bed scenes with partner Yoko Ono, or see this portrait of singer Charlie Hilton, by Miranda Lehman. The same applies for the band members of Dirty Beaches in this photograph, showing them in bed together, surrounded by white sheets. Dirty Beaches was initially a one-man band consisting of leading man Alex Zhang Hungtai, shown here as the person at the back. He later expanded his band to include saxophonist Francesco De Gallo, the person in front. Notice the difference in the posture and position of the two band members. With his arms spread and central position, Alex Zhang Hungtai draws more attention than De Gallo, ducking away behind by the sheets. The Finnish photographer Jussi Puikkonen concentrates on making portraits, both in his own work and in commissioned work. He is able to capture the essence of the subjects in a very unobtrusive manner.
