Tijdens deze masterclass gaan twee experts, Freek Kuin en Corinne Noordenbos, in op het verzamelen van fotoboeken.

Naast het verzamelen van fotoprints is het verzamelen van fotoboeken een mooie manier om met fotografie bezig te zijn en een waardevolle verzameling aan te leggen. Eerste edities, laatste of gesigneerde exemplaren, speciale edities met fotoprint - het zijn allemaal boeken die grote waarde kunnen hebben. Tijdens de masterclass op woensdag 19 juni komen twee sprekers aan het woord over dit onderwerp.
Allereerst fotoboekenmaker Freek Kuin, werkzaam als creatief directeur bij uitgever Rob Stolk en zodoende betrokken geweest bij de publicatie van velen fotoboeken. Hij komt vertellen over een aantal van zijn prijswinnende uitgaves en over het creatieve proces. Van concept tot vormgeving en alle ingredi&euml;nten die maken dat het boek een optimaal fotoboek wordt.

Na een korte pauze komt Corinne Noordenbos, een grote verzamelaar van fotoboeken, aan het woord. Als fotograaf &eacute;n voormalig hoofd van de fotografieafdeling van het KABK in Den Haag heeft zij op vele verschillende vlakken ervaring met het fotoboek. Haar studenten waren onder andere Viviane Sassen en Rob Hornstra, beiden ook bekend om hun succesvolle fotoboeken.
Deze masterclass is de laatste van een reeks masterclasses over het verzamelen van fotografie. In deze serie behandelden we eerder het kopen van fotografie, het inlijsten van werk, en de conservering en verschillende printtechnieken van foto's. De masterclasses zijn geschikt voor iedereen die ervaring heeft met het verzamelen van fotografie en/of eerder een verzamelcursus bij Foam heeft gevolgd.

What is the relationship between the photographer and the one that is photographed? In an attempt to answer this question, Amin Yousefi turned to photobooks, documenting the Iranian Revolution of 1978-1979 in his home-country. Zooming in on archival images of large demonstrations, he looked for protestors who locked eyes with the camera. 

Anonymous faces stare into the photographer’s lens, clearly showing awareness of being captured, inviting the viewer to look. Interestingly, the photographer at the time was most likely 

 aware of the returning gazes—due to the size of the crowds and the limitations of a 35mm camera viewfinder. In this case, Yousefi argues, it seems that the photographed is in control of the image, rather than the photographer, as one might assume. 

With the help of a magnifying glass, he rephotographed each of them—connecting himself with these individuals across time and space and isolating them into a newly formed crowd. Consisting of fifty portraits, 

Eyes Dazzle as they Search for the Truth 

examines how our knowledge about the past is formed through archival images. By turning his camera to those who looked back, Yousefi tries to understand the impact of one of the most influential events in Iranian contemporary history.

 refereert fotograaf Bruno Zhu naar een bekend gelijknamig boek uit de Japanse literatuur, dat voltooid werd in het jaar 1002 en de persoonlijke overpeinzingen bevat van een hofdame van de Japanse keizerin. Later werd de term geadopteerd als genre voor dagboekachtige teksten. 

, 2015 toont een specifieke pagina uit Zhu’s 'Pillow Book', waar hij foto’s van kussens in een telefoongids heeft geplakt. Het werk heeft een absurdistisch karakter. Het tweedimensionale kussen op de papieren bladzijden staat in contrast met het zachte gevoel van een werkelijk kussen. Het werk plaatst visuele motieven uit de privésfeer tegenover de publieke sfeer. In zijn praktijk onderzoekt Zhu op luchtige wijze zijn fascinatie voor fotografie als ambivalent symbool voor oppervlak en object, representatie en toe-eigening.
