Foam Talent Digital 2024-2025

Foam proudly presents the work of a new generation of artists in the group exhibition 

. The 20 participating photographers address the pressing problems of our times. Together, they explore and extend the boundaries of what photography is today.   

As a diverse group of artists, each of them presents their own visual language. Through their works, they critically look at the world around us. They use the photographic medium to question collective affairs and ongoing issues happening in the world. At the same time, they explore how these issues have an impact on a personal level, moving between a local, historical, symbolic, emotional and bodily perspective. 

This group of artists uses a wide range of photographic genres to tell their stories. With portraiture and documentary photography, digital created images and archival material, the talents create a space for the viewer to sit with situations and current events, to reflect and respond to.   

Complementing the physical experience at Foam, this digital exhibition offers a deeper look at the Talents and their works. What goes on behind the surface? What is the inspiration? What techniques are used? This exhibition combines artistic context with educational perspectives. Read, see, and hear more about the themes and topics and explore, engage, and interact with the works!

I remember Andrea's tears while we were walking towards his destroyed house that he was seeing for the first time since the explosion.

“All the war memories rushed back...

rushed to the corridors to hide which was exactly our moves and practice during the Lebanese civil war when the bombing would start.”

Zeina
worked on a rescue mission with a Chile team for 3 days.

On August 4, Walid was at home with me. He was on this same balcony when the explosion happened. (...) (I cried in his room and in his arms every day for a few months after the explosion.)

Twenty years ago 9/11 took place, leading the United States to announce its 'War on Terror' and involving Iraq in an ongoing conflict. This war was deemed as the first 'smartphone war' due to the introduction of the smartphone as an object of mass consumption in 2007. The widespread use of digital cameras enabled millions of users to capture the conflict from angles which had previously been out of sight. What formerly had been the domain of photojournalists and governmental agencies, became a limitless stream of images shared on the internet. This gave digital media a vital role in portraying the confrontation's countless layers.

Door de foto's uit hun kader te halen en ze buiten de museummuren te plaatsen, verlegt de tentoonstelling de grenzen van het medium en verkenen we nieuwe mogelijkheden.

Op donderdag lanceren we Foam Talent Digital | 2021. Doe mee met de FB Livestream waarin de uitgelichte Foam Talents de tentoonstelling en hun werk introduceren met een persoonlijke boodschap. Daarnaast geeft Foam-curator Hinde Haest een rondleiding door de online tentoonstelling.

Op vrijdag wordt de lancering van de online tentoonstelling gevolgd door een live screening van vijf video-interviews met Foam Talents Sarker Protick, Silvia Rosi, Daniel Castro Garcia, Hajar Benjida en Leonard Suryajaya.

Gemaakt door Betty Ras in 2006. Het kunstwerk is een inkjetprint op FinArt Baryta van Hahnemühle en heeft een afmeting van 50 x 50 cm.

Betty Ras is een van de fotografen die heeft deelgenomen aan 

, een langdurig project om de bouw van het Amsterdamse zakendistrict de Zuidas aan het begin van de jaren 2000 vast te leggen. Elk jaar werden weer andere fotografen gevraagd om hun interpretatie te geven van het steeds veranderende bouwterrein. De Zuidas kenmerkt zich door zijn hoogbouw waar grote multinationals en de topaccountants- en advocatenkantoren hun kantoren hebben. Op 

 tekent zich het silhouet af van een van de eerste kantoortorens in de wijk vanuit het perspectief van een nabijgelegen park. Ras heeft bij deze foto in zwart-wit gewerkt, wat de foto een tijdloze uitstraling geeft. Door het contrast met de donkere omgeving van het park springt de lichte cut-out eruit.

 is the well-known Photoshop selection tool of the same name. For Xin Li, the tool is much more than a handy feature to edit images. It becomes a means to draw parallels with societal control and censorship during the COVID lockdowns in China.  

The magic wand tool selects areas of images based on colour and hue—allowing smart selection and quick manipulation of images. Enforced with machine learning, it nowadays easily predicts which objects a user would like to see selected. Xin Li uses the tool to distort images, obscuring their original meaning behind layers of other images, often of other artworks.  

For Xin Li, this process symbolises the mechanisms of hiding and revealing facts and fake news, regulating the flow of information and controlling the dominant narrative. Metaphorically captured in the overwhelming fusion of shapes and colours, the visually explosive works tempt the viewer to look what lies beneath the apparent chaos. 

 weaves together several historical routes: that of his mother, growing up in Botswana after escaping the Apartheid regime of South Africa with her parents. That of his great-uncle, Zephania Mothopeng, the anti-Apartheid activist, imprisoned on Robben Island. And that of his grandfather, and his love for music, inspiring Makepe to pursue a creative career.

What at first glance may appear as a personal family narrative, in fact reveals the painful, racist and discriminatory political history of South Africa and the remnants of its colonial regimes. The series unfolds as a multi-dimensional, visual journey along these historical paths, touching on land dispossession, activism and colonialism.

includes striking portraits of his close relatives, sometimes re-enacting historical scenes, documentary photographs of important landmarks, as well as documents from Makepe’s family archive. Accompanying the visual material is a playlist of music, curated by the artist himself—connecting the work beautifully through the shared love for music.
