Foam Magazine #67:
The Test of Time
25th anniversary issue

Press release | Amsterdam, September 2025

Foam is thrilled to unveil the newest issue of Foam Magazine #67: The Test of Time.  To celebrate Foam’s 25th anniversary, this special issue of Foam Magazine reflects on both the museum’s legacy and the role of the photographic medium in society through the question: what makes an image stand the test of time? With contributions from 92 artists, curators and writers across the photography field and beyond, the issue offers a starting point for conversation and contemplation on the potential of images today. It also looks ahead, imagining the images that we wish to see tomorrow.

The question of what allows an image to stand the test of time serves as both reflection and provocation. It is a request to pause and reassess, to meditate on the nature of the image, and how it feeds and manipulates collective memory. The question reveals a preoccupation with the contentious origins of the camera, its roots in the imperial world order, and the alternation between its revolutionary potential and exploitative use, particularly with the rise of AI and the never-ending stream of visual and political propaganda. The magazine explores images that capture diverse ways of being and portraying oneself; that expand our understanding of our world; that have a positive social impact on society; that bear witness; and that work to build bridges across different perspectives.

A special section in this magazine features some of the most esteemed thought-makers in the field, such as Ariella Aïsha Azoulay, Oluremi C. Onabanjo, Vince Aletti, Gem Fletcher, Deborah Willis, Elisa Medde, and Erik Kessels, each selecting a single image they believe will stand the test of time, accompanied by their reflections. Five thematic chapters, Portraits, Innovation, Impact, Evidence, and Building Bridges, present portfolios from artists and past Foam exhibitors such as Tyler Mitchell, Lebohang Kganye, Laia Abril, Ernest Cole, Ren Hang, Sara Cwynar, Bertien van Manen, Sakir Khader, and Samuel Gratacap. In a featured conversation, Marina Abramović and Foam Magazine managing editor Katy Hundertmark revisit photography’s role throughout Abramović’s pioneering performance career.

The cover reinforces the issue’s central question: the front cover features a red shiny apple by Sara Cwynar, an enduring symbol of eternity, wisdom and seduction, in this case, of images. The back cover showcases Foam Paul Huf Award 2025 winner Myriam Boulos, whose work reminds us that photography is not only a witness to history, but also a mirror of identity. The new design of this issue of Foam Magazine is developed by Sandra Kassenaar and David Bennewith.

A New Era for Foam Magazine

Over the past 25 years, Foam has grown far beyond the museum walls. Becoming not only an exhibition space, but also a magazine, a digital platform, and a stepping stone for emerging talent. In doing so, Foam continues to reimagine what a museum can be today.

During that same time, our visual world has undergone a radical shift. Images are everywhere. We scroll through them, live among them, and are constantly shaped by them. To mark our 25th anniversary, we dedicated Foam Magazine #67 to a timely and timeless question: what makes an image stand the test of time?

From this issue onwards, Foam will publish a print edition once per year, serving as a curated selection of the state of photography today. Alongside it, Foam Magazine offers free, year-round online content that keeps photography lovers worldwide up to date, inspires, connects, and showcases the latest images and news in visual culture.
