On my mind... Linn Pedersen

For the past six years I have been running an artist run space devoted to new Scandinavian photography in Oslo with my partner Behzad Farazollahi, and the idea about the potential photography has in activating spatiality – has stood as a mantra of sorts. Challenging the use of the photograph in a white cube where an exhibition should be experienced as a whole; the works activating the space in total. As the new generation of photographers evolves, so does the medium – and the ideal of the linear narrative in a photographic exhibition is no longer of importance. I see a lot of photographic artists around my age who challenge space and narrative in their work, mixing techniques and formats and thus working towards an active space, where the exhibition links a set of images together in a larger body.

One of the artists that stand out for me is Linn Pedersen – her practice includes photography and installation. There are many examples that I’d like to highlight, but I wanted to focus on an installation view of her show at MELK titled Sedimentality. As a backdrop for the show, Linn dealt with the loss of a family member who got lost in the mountains far north of Norway. She was inspired by the traces we leave when we go for long hikes, and used this to inform her works for the exhibition, which included images of mountain paths, traces from her previous and upcoming projects, climbing ropes and concrete. Although it might seem as many pieces to connect, the works created a totality, where Linn managed to activate the room – connecting each piece in to a larger body where the single work is inferior to the whole. When inside the room, you are as if in her universe and for a moment forgetting that you are in a white cube.
