Door het lage perspectief dat fotograaf Jack Davison voor deze foto kiest, torent de rug van dit figuur boven de kijker uit. De regendruppels die over de jas stromen krijgen hierdoor een bijna dramatisch karakter, versterkt door het gebrek aan kleur. Hierdoor straalt het beeld een zekere somberheid uit, ondanks dat er geen gezicht te zien is. Door de minimalistische compositie en de keuze voor zwart-wit fotografie zijn het de kleine dingen die je aandacht vangen. Het contrast tussen de natte en droge stof, de glinstering in de regendruppels op hun weg naar beneden, of de manier hoe waarop het licht over de plooien in de jas valt. Het werk van Jack Davison omvat een reis door de geschiedenis van fotografie van avantgardistische experimenten tot objectieve documentatie, en van portretfotografie uit de vroege twintigste eeuw tot conceptuele studies.

Van jongs af aan had Davison een grote belangstelling voor literatuur en kunst. Zijn werk is gebaseerd op een breed scala aan inspiratie dat ontleend is aan de historische canon van de fotografie. Welk genre of stroming zouden het beeld, 

, kunnen hebben geïnspireerd? Door de korte afstand tussen de cameralens en het model zit je als kijker letterlijk dicht op de huid van de geportretteerde: de wenkbrauw- en wimperhaartjes zijn elk te onderscheiden, alsook de kleine bloedvaatjes op het ooglid, in deze close-up. De stekelige vrucht breekt met het dromerige beeld van het gesloten oog: het doet denken aan de surrealistische fotografie uit de jaren 1920 en 1930, van bijvoorbeeld kunstenaars als Man Ray. Dit werk was te zien in de tentoonstelling 

, waarvan meerdere werken in de collectie zijn opgenomen. De verzameling werk is een reis door de geschiedenis van fotografie van avantgardistische experimenten tot objectieve documentatie, en van portretfotografie uit de vroege twintigste eeuw tot conceptuele studies.

Wat voor gevoel geeft deze foto jou? Veel van het werk van de Engelse fotograaf Jack Davison zijn esthetische, op zichzelf staande beelden, zo ook dit portret van Agnes. Door de korte afstand tussen de cameralens en het model en de nauwe omkadering, waardoor het gezicht van Agnes vrijwel de hele foto vult, heeft het beeld iets intiems. Echter, het eerste wat waarschijnlijk opvalt is de unieke belichting. Door een (natuurlijk) sjabloon tussen het model en de lichtbron te plaatsen ontstaat een gestippeld patroon op het gezicht, dat als het ware gespiegeld wordt door de donkere sproetjes op Agnes’ wang en voorhoofd. Dit lichtspel, in combinatie met het onconventionele standpunt en de manier waarop het beeld is afgesneden, creëert een zekere poëtische abstractie. De verzameling werk is een reis door de geschiedenis van fotografie van avantgardistische experimenten tot objectieve documentatie, en van vroeg 20ste-eeuwse portretfotografie tot conceptuele studies.

Gemaakt door Fleur van Dodewaard in 2012. Het kunstwerk is een inkjetprint op aluminium en wordt weergegeven op 35 x 29 cm.

Hoe verhoudt fotografie zich tot de beeldhouw- en schilderkunst? De Nederlandse kunstenaar Fleur van Dodewaard verkent dergelijke vragen in haar werk. Net zoals haar 

 een hedendaagse conceptuele interpretatie van het klassieke stilleven. Zo minimalistisch als het werk is, zo complex zijn de vragen die het opwerpt.  

 speelt Van Dodewaard met de grens tussen verschillende kunstvormen en onderzoekt ze waar deze vervagen. Beeld 

, met zijn twee rode strepen tegen de lichte vlakken, had net zo goed een minimalistisch schilderij kunnen zijn. Het is enkel de schaduw van het rode blokje die de diepte in de compositie verraadt. Op deze manier speelt Van Dodewaard met het idee van beeldhouwkunst en creëert ze een fotografische sculptuur waarin de toeschouwer als het ware naar een driedimensionaal object kijkt door de lens van de fotografie.

Welke techniek heeft de fotograaf gebruikt om dit beeld te maken? In de serie 

 overbrugt de Zwitserse fotograaf Florian Amoser de afstand tussen twee uitersten: de wilde natuur tegenover data-gedreven technologie. Amoser, die bekendstaat om zijn conceptuele benadering van fotografie, creëert in deze serie werken waarin hij landschapsfotografie combineert met datavisualisaties en digitale manipulatie om een nieuwe visie op de natuur te bieden. Bedenk eens hoe jij voor het laatst de natuur hebt ervaren. Was dat daadwerkelijk fysiek in de buitenlucht? Of vanachter een beeldscherm? Amoser maakte deze foto's met een analoge camera. Binnenin ondergrondse grotten bracht hij het reliëf van de grotwand in kaart met een laser. De laser tekende contourlijnen op de muren van de grot en de camera legde urenlang de opkomende lijntekening vast op film. Het resultaat vangt de bewegingen van de laser in één foto.

A frail and twisted female body dissimulated behind pieces of paper: profoundly influenced by fashion and design, Ina Jang’s images are unconventional and light. She creates a complex and multidimensional world in which reality and fiction are intertwined using different surfaces and layers.

The base of Jang’s work is her experimental curiosity. Many of her images start with drawings or figures, which become obscured in surreal, hyper-stimulated environments. Jang’s goal is to find new perspectives in photography: "Coming up with something that completely breaks the boundaries might be impossible, but I think it’s always nice to try to break personal boundaries." With her conceptually and aesthetically playful approach to photography, Jang crafts her own visual language and creates light-hearted and poetic work.
