In de online serie Zooming In brengen we de Foam Talents van 2021 bij elkaar. In drie online Zoom gesprekken komen we meer te weten over de verschillende projecten van de talenten en hoe ze met elkaar samenhangen.

Deze zomer duiken we dieper in Foam Talent 2021 door met de verschillende geselecteerde kunstenaars in gesprek te gaan. Elk van de drie online Zoom gesprekken wordt opgedeeld in twee delen. Het eerste deel introduceert de kunstenaars en hun projecten, waarbij de nadruk ligt op hun aanpak en motivatie. Hierna gaan we dieper in op de onderwerpen die het werk van de kunstenaars met elkaar verbinden, met als doel de series te contextualiseren binnen het fotografieveld en de samenleving. In elk gesprek nodigen we ook een speciale gast uit.

Fotografen Delali Ayivi en Solene G&uuml;n reflecteren op het concept van thuis, dat zowel een schuilplaats als een gevangenis kan zijn, vooral in tijden van quarantaine. Door de focus te leggen op onderwerpen als identiteit, plaats, en marginalisering stellen ze de vraag wat het betekent om er wel (of niet) bij te horen. Beiden doen dit vanuit het perspectief van hun persoonlijke familiegeschiedenis van migratie.
Gast Erika Larsson heeft een postdoc-positie aan de Valand Academy in G&ouml;teborg, samen met de Hasselblad Foundation, waar ze onderzoek doet naar de betrokkenheid van hedendaagse fotografen en kunstenaars met het interbellum. Ze geeft ook lezingen over fotografietheorie en globalisering in relatie tot visuele cultuur.

Ismail Ferdous: the Shared Pulse of Image and Sound 

In search for a sense of belonging, Rehab Eldalil traced back her family roots to the Bedouin community of South Sinai, Egypt. This confirmed a spiritual connection she long felt towards the region and sent her on a ten-year long collaboration with the locals of St. Catherine, guiding herself through the lands of her ancestors. 

The Longing of the Stranger Whose Path Has Been Broken (

شوق الغريب للي تقطّع سبيله)

 Rehab closely participates with community members during this longstanding encounter, weaving together photographs with sound, video, and local Bedouin traditions of poetry, embroidery and plant medicines in a truly collaborative effort. 

The works emphasise the strong connection of the close-knit Bedouin community to their land, as its protective keeper. At the same time, the project reveals the hardships and constant struggle against displacement, violence, and governmental power, to which the community continues to be subjected. Recent plans for urban developments in the region stress the urgency of the project, becoming a testament of and protest to protect the natural state of the lands and its indigenous keepers.

Here, Foam proudly presents 20 selected Talents in their very own online universe. Out of a dazzling 2,480 submissions, this final curation of exceptional work defines the new horizons of the medium of photography, thematically and technically. Highlighting the connections, this interactive network brings all Talents together and maps out their distinct artistic viewpoints.

Spanning across the globe, the stories told by these artists reflect a universal yearning for belonging—a profound desire to anchor, to establish a connection with the past and carve out a sense of place. A driving force underpinning their work is the quest to trace heritage, untangle family lines, and explore personal identity.

Acknowledging the constructed nature of history, memory, or even their own thoughts, these artists boldly confront existing narratives. They embark on a journey of unlearning, challenging established stories, and turn to the expansive nature of photography to build new understandings and narratives, resonating more authentically with their lived experiences.

Noteworthy in their approach is the harmonious balance between tradition and innovation. The artists seamlessly blend traditional photographic techniques with cutting-edge developments, including the much-discussed realm of artificial intelligence, and other mediums such as moving image, embroidery and music.

How does a new generation of image-makers from Turkey use photography to reflect on the world around them? 

As part of the multi-year project Kısmet, this online group exhibition gives a snapshot of the emerging community of contemporary image-makers from Turkey. Kısmet is inspired by longstanding cultural, diplomatic and economic ties between Turkey and the Netherlands and delves into the diverse and intricate facets of Turkish visual culture, as seen through the lens of different generations of image-makers. Here, we present the work of four talented visual artists, born after 1990, whose voices will shape the vast visual landscape in Turkey, and beyond, in the upcoming years. 

Showing a diverse range of visual styles, what connects these four artists is the profound personal investment they put in their work. Their photography holds a personal dimension that goes beyond ‘merely’ having an affinity for the chosen subject matter. Rather, their practice and the resulting bodies of work reveal a deep connection to their perception of the world around them. What stands out are the distinct translations of their inner worlds, whether this is in the methodology, subject matter or aesthetics. 

For Oğulcan Arslan, the personal comes forward not only through the story he documents, but also through photographic techniques he uses. In 

, he intimately captures a friendship by adjusting light, exposure and composition to the emotions he experiences himself or from his friend. 

Alp Peker finds solace in their photographic practice to voice their protest against unspoken issues and social taboos they experience on a daily basis. Their photographs, shown here under the title 

, are an ode to the community Alp lives in, their goals, struggles, and weirdnesses.  

Kıvılcım S. Güngörün defines her work as autobiographical fiction. The collages in 

are a direct translation of her inner workings: intuitive visual responses to questions that pop into her mind, or new questions that arise during the process.  

, Cansu Yıldıran studies the power dynamics and gender inequality that they encountered in their ancestral village in Northern Turkey. Inspired by the personal stories of the women of their family, Cansu creates emotional atmospheres that investigate their own sense of identity, of belonging and the continuous search for a safe space.
