Playlist by Aby Fulani: visualising the work of Liz Johnson Artur through sound

We invited musician and producer Aby Fulani to create a playlist inspired by the works of Liz Johnson Artur. Offering a fresh way to experience the exhibition, music adds new dimensions to the essence of Liz's work, especially while museum doors are closed.

I started with the ground floor with Shigeru Onishi's slow poetic Japanese black and white photography, prints with amazing textures and techniques. I found this in Wilson Tanner’s ambient saxophone sound through to Nujabes - a Japanese beast on spiritual jazz music.

Carrying on the journey, Don Cherry’s melodies and whispers were a perfect bridge to evolve to Liz Johnson Artur’s portraits and intimacy.  I remember how the different rooms were displayed like an assembly of different drummers and percussionists, so for that I choose sound from Cheikh Lô: a West Africa-to-London rhythm and traffic jam, like the fantastic pianist Joe Armon Jones or the self-taught multi-instrumentalist Clever Austin. This is reminiscent of Liz’s current home.

To finish this playlist, I matched Middle Eastern sounds to the last room where Alexandra Rose Howland's multimedia documentation of Iraq under pressure, juxtaposed to everyday lifestyles, was presented. The ongoing emotion from Yoed Nir’s cello was perfect to illustrate the heavy feeling of that room and Yussef Dayes’ beautiful track “Storm Before The Calm” was the perfect icing on the cake to close this visual journey of the exhibition.
