Famous and Forgotten

Foam, Keizersgracht 609, Amsterdam

The early history of photography is largely dominated by men while women have always been at the forefront of innovation and experimentation in photography. How We See is an attempt to shift the focus of the photographic canon towards female makers, whose influence on the development of photography was (and arguably still is) long underappreciated.

During the evening historic and contemporary examples of important photobooks (both famous and forgotten) by female makers will be introduced, followed by a discussion on the need to emphasise female contributions to the photographic canon. Guest speakers are Batia Suter (photographer), Delphine Bedel (artist, director Meta/Books and contributor to How We See) and Russet Lederman (researcher, collector and initiator of How We See and 10x10 Photobooks).

The presentation and discussion will be followed by questions from the audience and drinks.

Foam is supported by the BankGiro Loterij, De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, Gemeente Amsterdam, Olympus and the VandenEnde Foundation.
