Press Release | Amsterdam, 10 December 2020
Foam Amsterdam, House of Photography/Deichtorhallen Hamburg and Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) present the second edition of the recommended Olympus Fellowship. The winners of the second recommended, Karla Hiraldo Voleau, Tobias Kruse and Mika Sperling will show new work, created during the fellowship, at Foam from 12 March 2021 onwards.
The three artists were unanimously selected by the photography curators Kim Knoppers, Ingo Taubhorn and Celina Lunsford from Foam, House of Photography/Deichtorhallen and FFF for the second round of the fellowship. They have been working on their new photo series since 2019 with the assistance of these curators, made possible through the financial and technical support of Olympus. Their bodies of work revolve around love, family and home; around migration, tolerance and language. The personal stories vividly open doors to new viewpoints on these common themes.
Karla Hiraldo Voleau studied photography at ECAL in Lausanne, and visual communication at Ecoles de Condé in Paris. She was born in the Dominican Republic (1992) and raised in France. In her work I Have Nothing To Tell You she shows her exchanges with young people in Japan as they divulge their secrets and share their personal experiences with love. Hiraldo Voleau's work explores identity, vulnerability and love, gender roles and the mechanisms in the relationship between women and men.
Tobias Krusewas born in Mecklenburg, Germany, in 1979. The work Kruse visualised for recommended is about feelings of anger, fear, insecurity and aggression that still pervade society in eastern Germany today. Feelings that remind him of the mood that existed during his youth in the 1990s after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Kruse lectures at the Ostkreutz school of Photography and is member of the Ostkreuz photographers’ agency in Berlin.
Mika Sperling was born in Norilsk, Russia (1990), and moved to Germany when she was one. She graduated in 2015 from the Hochschule Darmstadt in Communication Design and received an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2018. Today she lives in Hamburg, Germany. In her work Mother Tongue Sperling reflects on the relationship with her Vietnamese mother-in-law, who also lives in Germany. Sperling is mainly interested in the influence of different cultural backgrounds on interpersonal relationships, within particular family togetherness and the communication between the three generations of women: mother-in-law, daughter-in-law and granddaughter.
