Press Release | Amsterdam, 26 January 2021
Foam is proud to announce the names of the 20 young artists, whose work will feature in the upcoming Foam Magazine #58: Talent, which will be published in February 2021.
The fifteenth edition of Foam Magazine’s Talent issue presents a selection of outstanding artists, each in their own way feeling the pulse of our times. In spite of the many challenges humankind was confronted with in 2020, Foam counted the highest number of submissions yet: 1803 entries, from 72 countries - each of which represented a message in a bottle from different parts of the world, which felt more fractured than ever. This year’s common, underlying theme is a close, sharp look at one of the most important subjects, the human condition. While being born out of the Covid-19 pandemic, this issue is also a beautiful, hopeful and refreshing statement of the possibilities the photographic medium offers, and the exciting future ahead.
The selected artists are: Heather Agyepong (UK), Kwabena Sekyi Appiah-nti (BEL/GHA), Delali Ayivi (TGO/GER), Hajar Benjida (NL/MAR), Daniel Castro Garcia (UK/ESP), Soléne Gün (FR), Tommy Kha (US), Billy H.C. Kwok (HKG), Simon Lehner (AUT), Pat Martin (US), Plantation (NGA), Sarker Protick (BGD), Silvia Rosi (IT/TGO), Joey Solomon (US), Leonard Suryajaya (US), Lisandro Suriel (SX), Igor Tereshkov (RUS), Ana Vallejo (COL), Sheng-Wen Lo (TWN) and Bowei Yang (CHN).
Next to the regular features the issue contains a conversation between Carmen Winant and Laia Abril (ESP), winner of the 2020 Foam Paul Huf Award with her long-term project A History of Misogyny. The presented chapters, Chapter One: On Abortion and Chapter Two: On Rape have been unanimously selected by the jury as a remarkable example of the possibilities for the photographic medium to engage with complex subjects. Part of Abril’s winning project is on show at Foam until 7 March 2021, as part of the prize.
Foam Magazine #58: Talent will be published on 9 February 2021.

About the Foam Talent Call
Each year, Foam invites photographers to submit their portfolios via the Talent Call, an international search for exceptionally talented photographers under the age of 35. Selected photographers gain international exposure and recognition within the photography industry through a number of career-building opportunities offered by Foam, including publication in Foam Magazine, participation in the Talent Programme. and the opportunity for their work to be added to the prestigious Art Collection Deutsche Börse of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation in Frankfurt, funding partner of the Talent Programme.
State of affairs in photography
This was the 15th Foam Talent Call. Again, the selection committee was pleased by the wide variety and high quality of all submissions. Next to floating trends and tendencies, artists keep on focusing steadily on social, political and environmental concerns which very often intertwine with identity politics, and themes around mental health. For the editors of Foam Magazine and the curators of Foam the Talent Call is one of the central sources to navigate the state of contemporary photography. The submissions, coming from all over the world, create a map of the ever changing, and very much alive, photographic medium.
For selected photographers, the 'Talent stamp' functions as a springboard for the international photo industry, earning them global recognition and praise. Previous Foam Talents include Jonathas de Andrade (BR), Eric Gyamfi (GHA) , Fleur van Dodewaard (NL), Aàdesokan (NGA), Senta Simond (CHE), Nico Krijno (ZA), Philip Montgomery (US), Taryn Simon (US), Adji Dieye (IT/SEN) and Arielle Bobb-Willis (US) amongst many others.
