Press release | Amsterdam, 19 March 2020
Starting this year, Foam photography museum Amsterdam will work with the new management of Unseen, the fair for contemporary photography held annually in September at Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek. Foam will act as content partner for Unseen, which came under new management earlier this year, and will join Unseen’s international advisory committee. Foam will present its annual Foam Talent exhibition and will organise a programme of lectures and discussions: the Unseen Talks.
Foam was one of the founders of Unseen nine years ago and remained as partner until 2016. Unseen developed into an internationally renowned contemporary photography event and was able to stand on its own two feet. After the 2016 edition, Foam left the organisation and Unseen continued independently. Last February Unseen went bankrupt, after which the management was taken over by Art Rotterdam, the contemporary art fair that has just completed its 21st edition.
Nynke de Haan, managing director at Foam: “Unseen is an extremely important event for photography and for the city of Amsterdam. We could not stand by and see it disappear altogether. We are very happy that Art Rotterdam has decided to breathe new life into this organisation, and we very much look forward to this partnership.”
The annual Foam Talent exhibition will be shown in the Transformatorhuis (floor surface: 700m2) on the Westergasfabriek grounds. This exhibition presents work by twenty young artists from all parts of the world, scouted by Foam through the annual Talent Call of the international Foam Magazine.
Marcel Feil, artistic director at Foam: “Unseen emerged from our ambition to provide a platform for young photography talent and their representing galleries, where both collectors and the general public could discover remarkable and innovative photographic work. We are still committed to these goals, in our museum in Amsterdam, with our talent development programmes, and through our exhibitions abroad. The new Unseen management also embraces these goals, which makes this partnership an obvious and natural fit.”
Foam will furthermore organise the lecture programme Unseen Talks, also to be held in the Transformatorhuis. This programme will invite various exhibitors, curators and artists to give their views on the latest developments in photography. Foam will compile the programme and invite various other museums and partners to collaborate. Just like the Foam Talent exhibition, the Unseen Talks programme will be open to the public and admission is free.
Fons Hof (director of Art Rotterdam): “Foam’s knowledge of the latest developments in photography and its extensive network in the international photography community will contribute to consolidating Unseen as a platform for new photography. I very much look forward to the Foam Talent exhibition and the refreshing perspective it offers on the medium of photography with artists from other than the usual countries.”
Unseen Amsterdam will take place from 18 to 20 September at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam.
The Foam Talent programme and the annual Foam Magazine Talent issue are supported by the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, the Niemeijer Fund and the VandenEnde Foundation.
