Press Release | 8 February 2018
On 8 March 2018 the winner of this year’s Foam Paul Huf Award, the international photography award for young artists, will be announced. The jury for 2018 consists of Gregory Barker (chair, publisher STANLEY/BARKER, United Kingdom), Marina Chao (assistant curator International Center of Photography, United States), Tristan Lund (independent art consultant and curator, United Kingdom), Whitney Richardson (creative visual strategist, photo editor New York Times, United States) and Lars Willumeit (independent curator and art educator, Switzerland).
The international jury will meet in Amsterdam in the second week of March to choose a winner from 100 portfolios submitted by nominated photographers from around the world. The prize is awarded annually by Foam to an international photographic talent under the age of 35, and consists of €20,000 and an exhibition at Foam.
Last year’s winner was the Swiss artist Romain Mader. Mader’s work was selected for its deft balance of wry humour and layers of love, loss and loneliness and was exhibited at Foam from November 2017 to February 2018.
Now in its 12th year, the Foam Paul Huf Award boasts an impressive list of previous winners:
2017 - Romain Mader (1988, Switzerland)
2016 - Daisuke Yokota (1983, Japan)
2015 - Momo Okabe (1981, Japan)
2014 - Daniel Gordon (1980, United States) 2013 - Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs (1979, Switzerland)
2012 - Alex Prager (1979, United States)
2011 - Raphaël Dallaporta (1980, France)
2010 - Alexander Gronsky (1980, Estonia)
2009 - Leonie Hampton (1978, United Kingdom)
2008 - Pieter Hugo (1976, South Africa)
2007 - Mikhael Subotzky (1981, South Africa) and Taryn Simon (1975, United States)
To ensure an internationally representative selection, Foam approached around 20 nominators in various parts of the world. These nominators, specialists and experts in the field of photography, were each asked to select a number of talented photographers under the age of 35, from their own region.
The award can be presented for any type of photography: from documentary or applied photography, to journalistic or independent work. Winning work demonstrates a clear visual language and distinguishes itself in both form and content.
The Foam Paul Huf Award came about as a result of the special relationship between Foam and Dutch photographer Paul Huf (1924-2002). Paul Huf was known for his innovative photographic technique and was personally involved in the establishment of Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam in 2001.
The winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award 2018 will be announced on 8 March, via a press release. The exhibition of the winner will be on show in the fall of 2018.
