Press release | 8 March 2018
Daniel Shea (1985, US) was chosen as the winner of the twelfth Foam Paul Huf Award today. This annual prize, given to a photography talent under 35 years, consists of €20.000 and an exhibition at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam.
The Foam Paul Huf Award continues to attract portfolios from all over the world. The jury chose Shea from a pool of 100 nominated photographers, from 20 countries worldwide.
The jury report states:
”In a profoundly strong and varied list of international artists, the quality and consistency of Daniel Shea’s subjective visual idiom, greatly impressed the jury.
Using a variety of visual mediums, Shea’s work explores the complexity and ambiguities of urban development in his home city, New York. Drawing from his experience as a commercial photographer, Shea presents us with a seductive and disconcerting world of concrete, steel and glass, which traverses the boundaries of fact and fiction.
His latest body of work ‘43-35 10th Street’, allows us to reflect on late capitalism and its effects on a changing city landscape.”
Director of Foam, Marloes Krijnen:
”The quality of the work was remarkable this year. We are very pleased with the choice of the jury. One of Foam’s primary objectives is to discover and support young talent and therefore this award, along with the Foam Magazine Talent issue and internationally touring exhibition, is a focal occasion for us. We are thrilled to be able to add Daniel Shea to the list of winners of this prestigious award, that has become an important indicator for promising young talent. We look forward to Shea’s solo exhibition which we will show at Foam in the fall.”
