Foam opens concept store in the
Vijzelstraat
On Thursday, 26 January 2012, Foam opened its newest initiative:
&Foam, a unique new shop located at Vijzelstraat 78,
selling photography magazines, books, prints and more. &Foam's
collection comprises new and vintage books, posters, zines, limited
editions, music, T-shirts and bags. Foam's in-house gallery, Foam
Editions, has been given a new location in &Foam. Foam Editions
offers special limited editions of prints by leading photographers
and young talent at attractive prices. The gallery space is larger
and more accessible, so the selection has expanded considerably.
For example, work by photographers Blommers&Schumm and Philippe
Vogelenzang will now be available at Foam Editions. X+L architects handled the
special design of
the new concept store.
Four times a year, &Foam will engage in surprisingly
new collaborations with unique partners on the interface between
photography and other artistic disciplines. The kick off will be
Fashion&Foam, Music&Foam,
Design&Foam and Film&Foam will follow
later in the year.
Unique items are also included among the offerings at &Foam
such as the zines Self Publish Be Happy (ENG), Bolo
Paper (IT) and Club Donny (NL). Also to be found here
are new publications such as those by young photographers Ruth van
Beek and Erik van der Weijde, products by publishers such as
Aperture, Steidl and Magnum, and bags with the Hedgren label.
Fashion&Foam will feature collaborations with fashion
designers such as Joff, Klavers van Engelen, Emmeline de Mooij and
Freudenthal/Verhagen. A new album will be chosen especially for
&Foam every quarter, selected by record label Rush Hour. Music
by artists such as Arthur Verocai, Jungle by Night, Gene Hunt and
Amsterdam All Stars is also included in the collection.
Fashion&Foam
The new concept store opened with a unique combination of
photography and fashion. The collection naturally contains a large
number of photography books, such as those by fashion photographers
Terry Richardson, Hedi Slimane and Richard Avedon. Guest curator
for this quarter is Niels Klavers (head of Fashion at the Gerrit
Rietveld Academie Amsterdam). In collaboration with Salon/, Klavers
presented his exhibition 'ONDER ANDEREN…' in &Foam. For this,
he invited twenty alumni of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie to provide
a distinctive item from their collection. The presentation, in the
form of a unique installation, contains applied art pieces and
original designs, and reflects the vision of the Academie's fashion
department over the past twenty years. The design of the
installation is by architectual bureau X+L, which was also involved
in the design of &Foam's interior.
Special attention is given to 'Curated Bookshelves', which will
change every three months. For this 'curator's choice', Niels
Klavers, Penny Martin (editor in chief of The
Gentlewoman), Viviane Sassen (photographer) and Merel Bem
(fashion and photography journalist) have made a selection from
their favourite books on the theme of Fashion. These are included
in &Foam's collection and are given a special place in the
shop.
Foam Editions
For Fashion&Foam, Foam Editions - Foam's
gallery which is now located in the Vijzelstraat - has added work
by Anouschka Blommers & Niels Schumm and by Philippe
Vogelenzang to its offerings.
A special edition of three still lifes and a portrait of Chloe
Sevigny by Blommers&Schumm are be available for purchase.
Foam Editions has also acquired the series Seven Feet
Under in an edition of five for Fashion&Foam.
This series is by the young Amsterdam photographer Philippe
Vogelenzang, who often works for national and international fashion
magazines. For this bizarre and original series, Vogelenzang
photographed the insoles of designer shoes as gravestones.
Starting in mid-April, the theme of &Foam will be
Music&Foam. The guest curator will be Antal Heitlager
of record label Rush Hour.
