Hedi Slimane - Young American
15 July - 12 September
(Portraits of) Young American is the latest photography project by
photographer and fashion designer Hedi Slimane. Slimane has made
portraits of various creative people in the New York art scene in
an attempt to record today's generation of artists. Young American
includes portraits of Dan Colen, Gardar Eide Einarsson, Ryan
McGinley, Terence Koh, Nate Lowman, Dash Snow and Banks
Violette.
Hedi Slimane has been part of the worldwide creative community of
artists, filmmakers and pop musicians for many years. He studied
art history at Ecole du Louvre and worked as a designer for Yves
Saint Laurent (1996-2000) and Christian Dior (2000-2007). Slimane
photographs, designs furniture, is involved in architecture and
graphic design, and makes installations. He shot to prominence with
a series of publications: 'Berlin', 'Stage', and 'London - Birth of
a Cult'. Characteristic of Slimane's minimalist black-and-white
photos is the way they reflect his obsession with music, especially
the recent new rock wave movement. He has exhibited in New York,
Berlin, Paris and Zurich.
In addition to his enormous influence in the fashion world, where
he transformed the male silhouette with his designs for Dior Homme,
Hedi Slimane is celebrated for his new male ideal. According to the
curator of 'Costa da Caparica 1989' an exhibition of photos taken
by Slimane when he was a teenager currently in Lisbon, "Hedi is at
the crossroads of visual arts, youth culture, and the fashion world
[... and has] a very relevant role in the emerging trends of the
21st century".
'Sweet Bird of Youth', a group exhibition compiled by Slimane is
currently showing Galerie Arndt and Partners in Berlin. Slimane's
solo show 'Costa da Caparica 1989' can be seen at Ellipse
Foundation of Contemporary Art in Lisbon until 9 September 2007.
