Stephen Gill
Stephen Gill (b. 1971, United Kingdom) became
interested in photography in early childhood, encouraged by his
father. In the 1990s he worked as an assistant at Magnum Photos in
London before leaving to become a freelance photographer in 1997.
Gill has emerged as a major force in British photography,
exhibiting his work at many international galleries and museums
including London's National Portrait Gallery, The Victoria and
Albert Museum, Photographers' Gallery, Palais des Beaux Arts,
Leighton House Museum and Haus Der Kunst. He has had solo shows at
Recontres d'Arles, The Toronto Photography Festival and
PHotoEspaña. Gill has received special recognition for his numerous
original and beautiful photobooks, among which Invisible,
Hackney Wick, Hackney Flowers, Buried, Off Ground,
Coming up for Air, B-Sides, A Book of Birds and
Outside In. Outside In was initially
commissioned by Martin Parr for the Brighton Photo Biennial,
curated in 2010.
