Evan Baden
Evan Baden was born in Saudi Arabia in 1985. He attended the
College of Visual Arts in St Paul, Minnesota, and graduated with a
BFA in photography in 2007. He lives and works in St Paul,
Minnesota.
His photographs have been exhibited the US, Canada and Europe,
and added to the collections of the Walker Art Center, Milwaukee
Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago.
In 2008 he received the Jerome Fellowship for Emerging Artists. In
2009 Baden was nominated for the Baum Award for Emerging American
Photographers. His series The Illuminati (2007-08)
attracted a great deal of attention. With great sensibility Evan
Baden portrayed young people's faces illuminated only by their
computers, cell phones or other electronic devices. The series has
recently been shown in Paris at Paris Photo and Galerie du jour
Agnès B.
For Technically Intimate, (the series of the
portfolio presented in Foam Magazine #22 Peeping)
Baden finds images posted to the Internet that young girls have
taken of themselves. He re-stages the moment of the shoot. The
clash between the sexually explicit images and the girly teenage
rooms emphasizes the subjects' vulnerability and the absurdity of
the situation.
