Marrigje de Maar
Dutch photographer Marrigje de Maar (1944) studied social
sciences and politics in Rotterdam and graduated from Minerva
Academy in Groningen in 2004 with her widely-acclaimed
Mothersong series of interiors shot in Karelia
(Russia). She has exhibited in solo and group shows in The
Netherlands, Finland, Japan, USA and Australia. She also has
numerous prizes to her name, including the Zilveren Camera (for
foreign documentaries), PANL Awards and the New York Lucie Award
for New Discovery 2004. De Maar's work is part of the permanent
collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, among
others.
Home Made
For the series, Home Made, De Maar travelled to
China, Russia and Japan. She was especially curious about the
choices people make in their lives during periods of transition,
either in a historical or cultural sense. She captured their
private spaces, fascinated by the intimacy revealed.
Private spaces create a safe environment, protected from the world
outside. People use their personal space, consciously or
unconsciously, to express something about themselves. In this way,
these spaces can be seen as portraits. Self-portraits created with
the help of our daily necessities, tactile memories and the
embodiment of our dreams.
