New Perspectives
Foam starts photography programme newcomers

Press release | 15 December 2016

In January 2017 Foam will start a new programme for newcomers and status holders in Amsterdam. Due to the vast influx of refugees over the past year, there is an increased weight on the city. Not only to provide housing to the new inhabitants of Amsterdam, but also to support them in building up a new life and taking part in society.

The urgent and relevant subject of the refugee crisis was visualised in Foam though the exhibition Calais – From Jungle to City by Henk Wildschut, in which the photographer captured the situation in the refugee camp in the harbour city of Calais. Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei also focused on the painful situation of the many immigrants having to flee their homes during his exhibition at Foam in fall 2016. In this coming year, Foam will work actively with newcomers through the project New Perspectives.

Foam will host and organise various workshops, tours, masterclasses and exchanges within the museum and throughout Amsterdam. The programme was put together after thorough deliberation with newcomers and several collaborative partners such as the Refugee Company. The diverse programme, which prioritises personal development and connecting participants, aims to stimulate creative meetings and improve language skills through the use of photography.

Specific parts of the programme consist of a series of street photography workshops for youngsters in the refugee centre located at the Wenkebachweg. The project, which runs from January to April 2017, will also comprise of an exchange programme between two primary schools in Amsterdam, including children from newcomer groups and Dutch schoolkids.

New Perspectives was developed after in-depth discussions with newcomers and partners from the work field such as Refugee CompanyThe PublisherGastvrij OostRefugee Start ForceStichting de Vrolijkheid and Newest Art Organisation.

New Perspectives is made possible with support of the Kansfonds.
